Again, when people ask about starting up a new team with a new coach and the experienced voices advise them on how to do it and they don't heed the advice. Bad things can happen.

I know of a very top-level program where the director of the program has the parents pay cash.

Depends on wording...but these two players quit on their own. Small claims would be on your side if wording on papers is even remotely decent.
Its not like you booted them and not giving money back. I would prob reimburse for uniforms as you can always use extras and maybe that can
be considered a gesture of goodwill.

As for paypal, they suck. They side with the payer/buyer first and foremost...you are going to have to prove yourself big time. I hate paypal. I would never take
fees or stuff thru it.

But sometimes common sense and whats right isn't always what happens

You shouldn't have spent the money in advance when you didn't have a full team. You should have refunded all of the players with the money that wasn't spent.

Stop using PayPal.

Have you discussed the issue with the Dad of player A that issued the refunds? What is his position? Do you have a copy of a cancelled check that you gave to him with the refund of the team fees? Not sure how much time/effort I would put into fighting over the price of a new bat, but it is definitely a lesson learned.

I would get this settled ASAP and not let them troll your team for any longer than necessary. Talk to Dad “A” and see if he will cough up half or more since it was his team. Then you call both “B” and “C” and confirm that your payment to them via paypal will clear everything!!

Then move on w/o looking over shoulder at the ballpark.

Thank you everyone for the advice. I really wanted to enforce our agreement (which I think would stand-up), but I ultimately decided that it wasn't worth the time or effort. I decided to pay player B and C and move on. It was not a perfect scenario, and I definitely learned from the experience. I will be asking Dad A to cough up half (not sure he will). This is a small softball world, and I wanted to maintain a good reputation. I have also stopped collecting funds by PayPal.

Is dad of player A still with your organization? If not I would assume he has no interest in paying B&C out of pocket since he's whole again. Wouldn't hurt to ask though, maybe he's a stand up guy and will help you since you were nice enough to help him start a team under your club. I would suggest what others did, offer to refund B&C their uniform fees since you probably will need extras anyway and let them know you incurred non-recoverable league fees. Hopefully they will be reasonable and accept some responsibility for leaving and take that offer. If they don't, I would just pay them and be done with it. Sucks I know, but if you're planning to develop a club long term the last thing you want out there is people saying that you'll take their money and not deliver on a team. Whether it's true or not, future player's parents will be wary of that.
