Yeah...unless you're at the upper reaches of 10U competitive ball, any fly ball to the OF is an adventure. I do remember a near-miracle catch made by a 10U REC right-fielder against a tournament team that WON a game. Whenever I run into her, I mention it and get a huge grin. Heck, I know an older pitcher who can't seem to buy a break in RF. Every time I watch her pitch, a lazy fly ball to RF gets dropped, and runs score.

Fly ball to RF is a tough play... RF should be a set position. Not a fielder who plays LF and CF. Sliced balls from RH batters in RF is one of the hardest catches to make in softball. Plus, like other have said, throwing from RF is crucial, going to 3rd should not be automatic.

In college or even HS it can be, but that's much harder in youth ball. I know if DD was placed in RF all the time, we'd be looking for another team.

I was watching the LLWS and saw the CF and LF switch for one batter. The pitcher was throwing hard and they had a little lefty up there so I guess it was strategic..can honestly say I have
never seen that happen before...

DD got to play 2nd a few innings this weekend, no mistakes and made a sports center play backhanding ball in the hole and throwing runner out at 1st.

Of course HC was to there to see it. :)

Just a general aside, I always like when opposing coaches give your player a high five.

I know I try to compliment opposing players if the make a better then good play.

There was a hole at 2nd base?? They should probably have fixed that, sounds dangerous..;)

Keep working on footwork, first step explosiveness, and good mechanics. DD has always had an above average arm, and beautiful throwing mechanics. She was primarily a CF, who loved to play 3rd base occasionally. Through a teammates injury at the 14U level she was asked to play SS due to her range, and arm strength. Freshman year she was moved to 2B, and learned to play three different infield spots at a high level. The biggest hurdle was of course her backhand side at SS, and first step explosion. But footwork, plyometrics, and some work with a sprinting/running coach really helped her get to the next level as an all around utility player primarily on the infield now as we approach our college recruiting window.
