Oh...here’s another reason they probably want travel players to also play rec in the spring...double dues. I think they should lower rec dues for the travel players if they have to play on both teams at the same time.

You stated that the rec helps fund the TB team..how much are you paying (approx) for the TB team? Just as a point of reference, here in OK we pay between $1200 and $1500 (includes tournament fees) per year for our DD's 10U team....

Our summer season was $700 and fall ball is $400. We haven’t played in the spring yet, but spring rec fees are $400. So $1500 combined. I don’t know what they will charge yet for the travel team starting in January. They will be playing 1tournament in Feb and a couple in the spring then 5 in summer. I don’t know if that team will be 1 lump sum for Jan thru July. I would imagine it is.

Wow...that is expensive for rec.

When my dd first started travel with our town team, they were required to play rec until they were in 8th grade. Without the travel girls, they would be harder pressed to fill the rosters. They’ve had to adjust the playing range as softball numbers continue to decline. However the price of rec in my town was super reasonable.

We are in Nor Csl. Here is the issue. At 10u, the good players start leaving the rec league and the travel team associated with the rec league to go play on more elite teams out of the area. The rec league which also sponsors the local travel teams has decided in order to keep the top players in the local area and on our travel teams, they are forming a “B+” team that will play January thru Nov. with August and Dec off. My guess is depending on how this team does, they will spin it into an A team the following year. Our area currently does not have any A level teams at any level. Players must commute across bridges an hour to find these teams. I’m not willing to do that right now for my dd even though she would easily make one of those teams. My dd is a pitcher and she’s getting plenty of time on the mound right now so at age 10, I don’t want her on a A team until 12u...even 2nd year 12u. I’m really hoping our newly forming January team works out and they actually keep good players and find others or recruit back the players who left the area for stronger teams.
Regarding rec, I don’t know how my dd can go back to coach pitching and no dropped third strike, stealing home etc. which are 10u rec league rules. Maybe if they use travel rules in 10u rec. this year it might be ok, along with making the top players like my dd...maybe a team captain or assistant coach and give her more responsibility on her rec team.
I'm also in NorCal. I don't know what rec league you're in (you don't have to name them out loud), but there should be no coach pitch in 10u. For league games, if you don't want to have dropped 3rd and open plate, there is no requirement for it, but as you are probably already aware, All-Stars and winterball in addition to the Select tournament season are all played with USA Softball rules, with the exception of the per-inning run rule in winterball.

We're a medium-sized league and we've had mixed success with the Select program. It takes an extreme amount of patience on the part of the parents to keep a young team together for more than 2 seasons. It's extremely difficult to chart what the goals for a young select team *should* even be, let alone getting a majority of parents to buy in. The first year, the Select team did its own thing. We took the counsel of other leagues the following year and spread the Select players to Rec teams. That worked pretty well. It's good for 8u/10u, but this is NOT a situation I'd want for 12u. We have never had the bodies for 12u Select, though, so it's not an issue for us.

Our Select team's fees include their Rec registration. One payment serves for all. Our treasurer is a professional controller, so we have an extremely strict accounting breakdown of all player fees, such that the Select teams pull their own weight in full. The Rec program supports the Select team by existing, but the costs of Select play are borne by those teams entirely.

I do not like to count other people's money, but those numbers sound a bit high to me. I don't know what you're paying for field usage, etc, but I can tell you that to an absolute certainty that $400 for spring Rec is WAY out of line with the regional average. The high water mark in NorCal is around $150, so that 400 is a number I would have real concerns about.

Based on everything you have stated, your DD is ready to make the jump to full-time travel. A couple of years ago, A ball players were allowed to guest pitch for spring interleague teams that did not have any pitchers, so that could potentially be a way to remain connected to the rec league, but I'm not sure of the current rule on that.

No, that would be ridiculous. Girls go to travel teams to get away from the playdaters and butterfly chasers in rec.
