I thought D1 coaches signed long term contracts. When they leave is it because the contract ended, they broke their contract, or the school fired them? Or, do they not all have contracts? I believe the coach at the D1 my DD starts at in the fall just signed another 5 year contract so I was assuming that generally means she will be there for the next 5 years.

It is one of the main reason so many college football coaches get extensions year after year.

Is softball a revenue sport anywhere? I can't imagine that it is. It costs a lot to equip, feed, and pay for travel of a team not to mention coaches, tutors, trainers, grounds crew, etc...

So basically football and basketball (some other specific sports at specific schools) pay for everything else right?

I doubt anyone can make a profit with it. Alabama reported revenues of $1.17 million for softball last year. Murphy's salary alone eats up over 25% of the revenue.

DD and DW were there for the Aquafina Invitational from Feb. 23 to Feb. 25. They attended 5 of the 6 games that Florida played that weekend. According to them, they seriously doubt more than 500 people were in the stands for any of those games. They sat very close to the home dugout for each of the games because there were so many seats open. DD was surprised how empty the place was. But she did get to witness 2 no-hitters by Kelly Barnhill that weekend. NOTE: I'm sure a home game against Alabama or Auburn will pull in more fans than a game against Georgia Southern.

One of those was against us! lol

DD started the second game and we lost 3-0 to Ocasio. That was one of her better games and UF fans were gracious enough to congratulate her. I thought that was classy. Made me not hate the SEC quite as much. :)

I'm sure Eastern Illinois and Cal State Fullerton football program are rolling in the dough...

No. There are about 20 or so NCAA football programs that make money.

Other the biggies, college sports (including football) are money losers.

Sluggers,

I put some data that's updated in 2011 (see below). But I would say there's 60 to 70 schools that are profitable in football. Note these are mostly the schools in the power 5 conferences and maybe Notre Dame. Keep in mind the BIG 10 network distribution was $51million to each team last year. Theres crazy money in college athletics. But after the power 5 conferences, yes football doesn't make money. That's why coaches get paid $40 to $50K in the smaller D1 schools. Which also explains the ridiculous price of softball camps, as that what coaches do to subsidize their income.

DD and DW were at that game. I will have to mention that to them. Small world... DD was very happy with how classy the players are. She met several of them including her favorite players; Amanda Lorenz and Janell Wheaton. She also spoke to Kelly Barnhill and was surprised at how "normal and human" she is. I guess she was expecting something else... She had her picture taken with all of the seniors and a couple others. They were all gracious and very kind to her.
