IMO very important to be on a team that will play in front of the coaches of the schools your DD is interested in if she knows where she wants to go to school.
We just had to make a choice between 1) 18B “Showcase” that would play some showcases but mostly compete for a USSSA trophy. And 2) 18 Gold that will play all showcases, which focuses on playing all the girls and will make adjustments at college coaches request. It’s different - if you want to play for a trophy it’s a big change. Generally no bracket play or random draw.
Unless your kid is playing in a big name national team, that has track record for sending kids to colleges, no big time coach will watch your showcase team. If your kid is playing with abc elite gold team, you will be better off going to the college camps and get in front of the coaches. Colleges have plenty of one day camps in the fall and winter for less that 100$. Once your kid is recruited, the coach may ask her to play with a team that is playing tough schedule.
See where they play and don't stop there. See who they play. One thing that can help a team is playing top competition because they will have coaches there as well. No your DD wont get an offer but several times as a first year 14U team we faced great 2nd year teams and caught coaches attention which helped build a following that carried into our second year. Also in one instance we faced a team from the Midwest that had a great pitcher and probably had 12 teams from the Midwest there looking at her. When we beat her and our #1 threw a 2 hit shut out I was giving out info left and right to schools that had heard of our org but didn't know much about our team. In that moment our reach spread out to a lot more colleges and opened up so new opportunities for our girls.
Just to say...if your team is coached by a college coach chances are he/she can get other coaches to come watch but yes players should email coaches to have them come watch
