We knew this was a year DD would be switching teams to move up to better competition. So we made our list of teams she wanted to try out for and braced ourselves for the madness that is try out season. Then we got super lucky and one of the teams on her try out list was looking for a pick up player for the end of the season and DD was able to latch on and get an offer for next year that she accepted. It has a great turn of events for her as she will move from 14B to 16A next year and loves her new team so far. Plus we got to completely avoid the craziness of try out after try out. I had already signed up for many of the try outs so I'm continually getting emails from organizations with try out times/dates, plus the postings on the boards in our area this year are through the roof with lots of organizations expanding and adding teams.

How are try outs going for everyone else?

I have been coaching for many years, the last 5 at the 18 level. I don't know if we will continue in this venture (the HC has been coaching over 20 years). As an independent Team we are finding that building a competitive team is getting harder and harder each year. The "bigger" Organizations have at least 2 and sometimes 3 18U teams, even though we have beaten these teams, players are drawn to the "name" and not actual field work... getting pretty crazy right now.

I'm so envious of you! DD has an offer in hand and has been cold-called by a couple others (one coach we know from rec days and one from an org she tried out for two years ago), but none of these are the true "A" level teams she's hoping to get on for first year of 16U. We've got stuff on the book through mid-August (assuming she doesn't get an offer she likes before then). It's exhausting, annoying, and frustrating. Plus school ball starts in a little over a week so throw those practices in the mix to schedule around. I hate this.

Tryouts for the one and only team that checks all of our boxes is tonight. With a second tryout tomorrow night. So we'll know pretty quickly whether it's a go...

I'm doing my best to be the eye of the storm for my daughter, but it's hard when my insides are spinning like a Category 4. I swear this is harder on a parent than on the athlete. I don't remember being stressed back in the day when I was doing tryouts, but maybe that's just the fuzziness of old memories.

Got to wade through the teams that charge $9,000 a year to be on one of their 100 teams.

Very different experience for us this year. Dd was actually asked by a few different orgs to join their programs - no tryouts necessary. Some coaches apparently saw her play during school ball or against their teams. One she guest-played for. It was nice to not have to go through the craziness this year.

This is still July, right?

I know, right? Things have changed here as well, tons of tryouts going on this week, there were several last week, and then there's a lull until early August. Hoping to avoid the circus this time around and stay where we are.
