Then we got super lucky and one of the teams on her try out list was looking for a pick up player for the end of the season and DD was able to latch on and get an offer for next year that she accepted. It has a great turn of events for her as she will move from 14B to 16A next year and loves her new team so far. Plus we got to completely avoid the craziness of try out after try out.

The absolute best way to find a team. As a coach, you can quickly determine if they can do the basics well, but you really can't tell very much about a player by how fast they run to 1B or how far they can throw. Especially with older players, I'd much rather see them in a game situation and how they interact with the rest of the team. As a player and parent, you get to see the coach and team in action, and possibly get an early view of potential problems.

DD is staying on her team from the last 2 years (essentially - though it doesn't sound the same having been through 3 coaches and 3 organizations; such a bizarre couple of years!). We have 7 committed going into fall. Our first team tryout is this Saturday. We have organizational tryouts Aug 5 & 12. I really hope that'll be it but historically we've been looking for players pretty much all fall.

DD was lucky enough to throw a shut-out against a very good team two years ago. The coach never forgot her performance and after switching organizations, recruited my daughter seemingly forever. She was lucky enough to hang around the team and was a pickup for their Nationals where she played well. We made the switch this past season. She's been asked back (had a very good year) so there will be no tryouts for her. Her team looks to be even stronger for next year.

DD did try out in February for an even better team during the winter break. And although she did okay, she was not asked back. Come to find out who was, and was a little shocked. I can only think politics played a large part. We will try again for next year, I suppose. Most good teams recruit during the season and tryouts are for a unicorn or a stud of a disbanded team.

10 Team wow!!! How did y'all even have time for that.

We set out two weeks where she went to tryouts every day. Most were teams that she wasn't serious about joining, but I wanted her to get a lot of exposure to other teams. This way, she's confident in her final decision, she was able to see how other coaches work, and she was able to get a handle on where her skills match up with others in her age group. She mostly enjoyed it, although she was pretty beat by the last one. When you include two days of guest play, lessons, and a camp she attended, she must have played 4-6 hours of softball every day for 14 days in a row. She's resting now, lol.

Things I dislike:

1. The older teams charge more even though they play and practice less.
2. Team chemistry is huge. Unfortunately, you can't figure who's on the team until it's too late.
3. Coaches that don't really know they're playing or practice schedule so us parents don't have a clue how to budget or plan.

Around here, 18u teams are harder to find so we haven't yet been to a try-out yet.

10 Try Outs!!!! That's just crazy. I couldn't handle all that pressure. I guess the good thing for your DD is that by about try out 6 they should be getting easier and less stressful.

That was the idea, and it did work out that way.

2nd year 12U on a mixed team last year and half the girls had to move up. HC brought her back for this year, but I wasn't crazy impressed with the pitchers that got selected, but I didn't say anything because he said he had 3 girls committed that weren't there Tuesday night. Yesterday my daughter texts me saying she wants to go to 13U tryouts to move up with the girls she was really close with. I say ok, but I text her HC to make sure he's cool with it. He says "Yeah, go for it!". She has no problems the whole night, catches all the fly balls hit to her, gets all the grounders, throws from 3rd to 1st are on a rope, so I'm thinking "Cool!" because I like the parents that are moving up too. 8 girls are selected, all 5 that moved up too, but not my DD. She was devastated and I can only think her HC had something to do with it and was holding her down in 12U. Now she isn't even sure she wants to go back to her 12U team because she doesn't trust her HC now.
