I am trying to understand what is wrong with how the batter's box is laid out. In softball, the batter's box is 3 feet behind the plate center of the plate and 4 feet in front. In baseball, the batter's box is 3 feet behind the center and 3 feet in front of the center of the plate. His is one rule book's outline of the plate:

I don't think there is anything wrong with it, now that I have re-educated myself. If you pull a string from the back corner of the plate down the foul line, the string will intersect the outside line of the batter's box behind the corner, but when you add the width of the chalk inside the string, the inside edge of the chalk will be pretty much right at the corner if the batter's boxes are laid out with the outside of the chalk at the correct dimensions.
