Looking to bring a couple guest players on our travel team for the rest of the season.(3 tournaments, 2 local 1 out of town) They are interested in joining the team for fall season but have not committed to that yet. Should the 2 guest players pay the tournament fees or should the team cover them? This is mine and my DD's first season with travel ball, so I don't know the etiquette for guest players for multiple tournaments.

If it matters both of the guest players seasons with there normal team is complete at this time for spring /summer season.

If it were me and I was looking to add those players in the fall I would not charge them anything. I assume you need those players to play at full strength for the upcoming tournaments.

It's most likely a small amount in the big picture. Typically teams are paid up by now anyways (so guest players aren't paying even if they join the team).

I have never heard of a guest player having to pay anything. Usually a guest player is there to help the team for the weekend(s). The teams budget for the year should have already been covered. Maybe a cost for extra uniforms?

That sounds like they're actually going to be on your team for the rest of the season, not really picking up. Unless there were some compelling reason not to, I'd do some sort of pro-rated expense.

It also depends on how comfortable you feel with their ability. A guest player, especially one with no skin in the game, is far easier to leave on the bench if they are a liability. Guest players should know they are at the bottom of the pecking order.

In general we have always attempted to avoid guest players, but there are some legitimate times they are needed. When it occurs for our team, we typically do not charge them anything. There was one exception. We lost a player due to injury and another player was asking to join our team. Her intention was to stay on our team long term. The timing was perfect. We did not charge her dues for the rest of that season, but had a new uniform printed for her with the number she selected. She paid for the uniform but nothing else.

My DD has also guested for numerous teams over the years. She has never paid a dime for any of those teams. In some cases she was added merely as a pitcher and played a few games throughout the weekend. At other times she played every game and was utilized at numerous positions. It has really varied over the years. But she always knew what to expect and enjoyed the opportunities.

Always play your pickups. If you sit your guest players, the word will spread. Good luck getting anyone to help your team out in the future.

Obviously, to each his own. If you are in that much of a need for guests on a frequent basis, there are probably bigger issues at hand. I'd rather focus on having a solid squad, where the full time kids work for and earn their spot. When those kids see guests taking their hard work away, they will start looking for another team.

We were never asked to pay when my dd played as a guest player. However, I usually tried to give the coach some money. In that way, I hoped it would prevent some of the parents from complaining too much. When my dd showed up, she usually played all of the games.
