DD did hitting clinics at UAB as a 6yo and 7yo. It was just a half day each over two days for $50. I did it because she just loved playing and idolized older players. They separated them by age and she had a blast. They were in groups of 5 so they got really good instruction and they had it on a level the kids could understand. The drills were set up for them to have fun while learning in the background. Honestly I think they did it as much to help young girls fall in love with the game as they did to teach anything.

You're almost always better off getting a continuous hitting or pitching coach and using you're money to pay him instead of camp fees. College coaches are knowledgable, but a player needs continuous feedback and evaluation to improve their game. A camp just cant do that and almost are always fund raisers for the coach. Coaches do use them for recruiting grounds, but they're only really looking at a handful of players. If you're going to a camp, do it to get in front of a coach if you're interested in that school. It really pays to be on a coaches radar, and that they know you're coming and have some interest prior to going to camp.

If your looking for faster improvement and new skills for you DD to learn, then I would suggest spending your money on private lessons as opposed to the camps. If you want her to be part of a group setting with other girls where she meets new people and kids and gauges where she is regards to others, then stick with the camps. Just my 2 cents. My DD will be 14 next month and has never been to a camp.

DD sees a hitting coach once a week for 30 minutes. We also practice at home or at the fields a few times a week as time allows over the summer.

My DD didn't take a private lesson until she was 13 and it was from a former standout UH catcher. She did however attend a couple of UH camps in her younger years. I didn't think much of them other than a fun experience. However, if she was interested in going to UH she would have gone to every camp they offered!

With that said, there is no need for you to be hating on the UH camp. Keep on doing your private lessons, which I don't think your DD needs at this age. Your job is to not burn her out. Keep it fun. But, if Tim Walton was looking at your kid you might have a chance!!! ha!!!

DD attended several softball camps from the local high school to University TN at Chattanooga, University Georgia, University Alabama and a camp run by Crystal Bustos. I always followed DD through the camp take notes so when we go home I can reinforce what was learned in the camp. I also try what we learned in the camp myself to make sure it works, it also gives me insight to teach what I saw at the camp. If I learn something new great or if I see something I already are doing it helps reinforce that I am teaching something that others feel works. IMO the Bustos camp was the best and had the most instructions followed close by the Alabama camp and the Georgia camp.

DD has finished her college career and completed her first year as assistant high school coach, she is also a math teacher, and they just completed their high school softball camp, where hopefully the kids and parents feel they learned something.
