She had fun. They had five big awards (golden glove trophy) at the end. My daughter was awarded the hustle trophy out of 100 campers. She busted her butt and never complained about the heat or anything else. Really happy with her work ethic. She tries to be the first one out of the dugout and always hustles between stations. It was pretty apparent that many of the kids spent most of their time inside. There was lots of complaining and dragging rear between stations.

Very nice and what a great start to her young softball resume. A shiney trophy is really cool, as it says she already understands that the game itself is greater than the individual pieces. Respect from the selection committee, coaches and 99 competitors. Admiration from the DF Forum! ;)

Great story, thanks for sharing it.

Your dd got More Out of this camp then you think.
Her attitude and hustle were recognized. In 8 years she won’t remember if she learned how to hit better at this camp. But she will always remember that hustle is recognized and rewarded.

I would bet that 98.2% of softball clinics are grouped by age vs. ability. How is the coaches staff supposed to know beforehand that your DD is a phenom and should be practicing with the 12 year olds?

The Nike camp we are going to next says they group by ability. I believe they do a quick evaluation and then split up based on that.

College camps are used to generate income for the team. They are also a chance for the colleges to bring in recruits with all the other (paying) camp kids and not count it as a visit. Wanna guess who the coach is going to spend their time with? While the younger girls are having fun spending time with the players, the coaches are working out with prospective recruits.

When DD was 8yo old she attended a 4 day UCLA softball camp and stayed in the dorms with a couple of friends. It was fun for her, having played since she was 5yo with a couple of years of all star experience gave her some skills to work with. I think the highlight was seeing and being coached by current and former college players. I feel they got some good, albeit basic instructions, and DD was given a special award and her mentor, Devon Lindvall (her other 2 sisters played for Oregon), hand wrote her a really nice note of things to work on and very inspirational. In addition, the kids got a tour of the campus and in 2 years UCLA will be one of the schools she will apply to (but not for softball). At the end of the day the camps are a fundraiser for the athletic program but can be a great experience for young girls who enjoy the sport.

A lot of schools run separate camps for younger players and prospects. My DD is working a couple of camps this summer. If any of your DD's are headed her way please make sure they introduce themselves!

UH has a separate prospect camp that was held a couple of weeks ago. This oldest at this camp was 14. The bulk of the kids were 10u and 12u.
