As many of you know, after getting DD into playing College ball, I have since dropped back to take a 12U TB team. One other thing I may have failed to mention is that our organization was decimated last year by a mass exodus of teams leaving and finding other homes. This year, my 12U team and an 18U team is all that is left of a former 9 team organization. Since the Head Coach/President of the organization will "Retire" next year, the organization now falls on me which I will gladly take and once again build it from the ground up. Since I knew about that beforehand, I'm currently working on 3 teams at one time. I have 12U YOs, 11YOs and 10YOs on my team. They all deserve to be there.
That said, I have a 10YO pitcher that has an older sister who also plays TB and quite honestly, she is my #2 pitcher. Now some might say that a 10YO pitcher can't be that good or the TB team that has a 10YO #2 can't be that good, but I would seriously have to disagree. She does well! She doesn't strike out very many batters but contrary to popular belief, that's not her job! A pitcher's job is to place the ball in such a way as for it to be called a strike or to be hit in such a fashion as to be a routine out by the defense...and she does one hell of a job at it!
Because of the older sister, my player gets nothing but hand me downs from the older one since the family has extremely little disposable income. It doesn't matter what it is, it's always hand me downs for this kid from gloves to cleats to bats to even practice uniforms. Both parents work extremely hard for their money but are in middli'n paying jobs. Couple that with TB fees, equipment fees, hotel fees for the older one and little is left for the younger one.
Several weeks ago, my pitcher broke her 31/21 Demarini in a tournament game. Since the family has little disposable income, they couldn't afford to replace it immediately. Luckily, her teammate had an old bat she could use in the meantime while they saved up. It was another hand me down from the other player's older sister.
Fast forward 2 weeks. As many know, Coresoftball20 and I are friends. We try and text each other at least once a week although sometimes our schedules conflict so it can sometimes be a week and a half or even two weeks. Anyway, two weeks ago, after not talking to him for at least a week, I get a text saying, ' I just got a 31/21 ASA Ghost Demo in and I want to give it to someone who's is deserving and needs it.'
So I text him my 10 YO Pitcher's story and he says, 'Screw it! it sounds perfect to me!" and sent it to her completely free of charge. She got it 2 days later and used it that night in rec league. Her first at bat with the Ghost, she hit a stand-up triple. That weekend she played TB with us and the first game, she hit a double and a single! it's only been down-hill from there.
She and her family are so appreciative that they can't stand themselves! Coresoftball20................YOU ROCK!!!!!!!!!!!!! And thank you from the bottom of mine and my pitcher's family's' hearts!
