I'm confused as to why TB girls continue to play rec at all. That's just not really done around here. I'm aware of one B-level TB team that requires its girls to also play spring rec at the sponsoring park. Most parks have TB teams as their crown jewel and the TB and rec teams do not intermingle. I know that if DD was doing TB and rec, I would prioritize TB activities over rec activities because, as others have pointed out, we pay tons for that and some coaches will bench you for missing practice. Now, having said that, I would say that rec softball games take priority over summer basketball or volleyball practice, for example (different sports). But, then again, I wouldn't have DD do TB and rec simultaneously.

DD has become a very good pitcher over to the last year. I wouldn't put her in that rec league now.. but for two seasons she threw her change up over and over in those games.. now it's a go to Pitch.
League rules are fine.. there's just a short supply of pitchers in our area.. sad

We did some fundraising this year and were able to hire a pitching coach and offer free pitching clinics to any girls in our rec league who were interested. Participation was off the charts! We saw a lot of improvement from the existing pitchers and some of the younger girls who had never pitched before showed a lot of talent.

I wonder if it's regional. I'm sure there are differences. Last year we considered putting DD, then 2nd year 10U, on a 12U rec team to get reps pitching with the bigger ball before we moved up to 12U travel. All I had to do was go watch a rec game to veto that idea. It wouldn't be fair to have her on a rec team even playing up; the difference between the rec level and travel level is too huge where we are.

ETA: that said I have known plenty of parents who have their kids play both. When it happens the rec team in question tends to be very dominant. I think it's completely unfair to everyone including the girls playing down in rec.

The issue of TB players on REC Team aside......

I’m not sure why you would feel like you needed to discipline the player for attendance especially at REC level? Would it matter if she had a sleepover at G-Ma’s house instead?

There are conflicts all of the time and as long as they are making good faith efforts to attend and not mocking the situation then you play them as usual.

Sucks it is the playoff but honestly they are helping the other kids that SHOULD be playing REC to have an opportunity to play and impact a big game!

It's rec and shes a kid get over it. Besides trophies are made of plastic. You're putting too much energy into something that's worth nothing. Make the kids better where they will play above their expectations and yours. That's how you coach

Also. why to they play rec? They have friends on the team, they want reps, they want to support the program, ........ "Travel" has this air like it's something special when in reality it's fair to marginal rec coaches

I personally would much rather have a TB pitcher throwing 60 MPH strikes then a kid walking everyone. Changeups should be illegal though.

Lots of reasons to still play rec at least till 14..
Reps
Try new pitches.
Develop skills in Fielding and hitting.
In my DDs case several younger girls in our area came to see her play and now pitch, in some small way because of her. She works with the kids in our rec league now.
The other benefit is that it allows rec players to see pitching they won't usually see in rec.. they helps them understand what travel looks like and some want that challenge.

My DD plays both TB and Rec. She plays TB for competition. She plays Rec to play with her friends she goes to school with. But TB always comes before Rec.

This, if a kid is playing A or even B level tb they should not be playing rec at all unless they are playing way up in age maybe.
