Not a fan of the procedure. As an umpire, I couldn't care less what the fans say or do, they have no standing in the game. The umpires have more important things to worry about than finding a loudmouth in the stands and doing such will only create an unnecessary distraction.

This really isn't really anything new, they've just shifted a little more responsibility to the umpire. I do not believe an umpire should have to initiate the process. I know of no tournament where the TD (or AD in school ball) who did not have the authority to instruct a team to address a problematic fan or remove him/her. Problem is a matter of priorities.

A TD very likely has a financial stake in irritating those who pay to be there. An AD must deal with the parents at another level and depending on the politics in a school, may be risking their position. These are things I have experienced and it irritates the other fans and some players that they have to deal with this. OTOH, I have also been witness to a TD direct the umpire to stop a game until a couple of unruly fans left the complex. He was thanked by the other fans and both coaching staffs.

This may help with umpire retention a little, but will have next to no effect outside of tournament play and that isn't where the umpire starts and in many cases, the umpire who at least tried to deal with it is gone after two years. If they survive a 3rd year, we just may have a winner on the longevity chart.

I do not know about most of you but I am oblivious what is going on in the stands. If brought to my attention, it will be fixed.

We had to call up the chain last year to settle some parents down on other Team. Disappointed me DD was a mess, she knows better.
