So my daughter's team is going out to the Colorado Fireworks tournament in a couple weeks. She has been invited to play in an "All Star" game prior to the tournament with a $165 fee attached. The claim is that there will be coaches attending the games (multiple games) and that they choose players from those games to play in the All American games later in the week.

Is this a money grab or do I spring for the $165?

If you can afford it, do it. It's fun for the girls and while the coaches coaching the All-Star games are NAIA I believe, there will be a lot of D1 and D2 coaches there watching.

Hmmm - I just answered this based on the Sparkler...maybe you are talking about a different tourney? If so ignore me!

Both.

DD played last year - and while there were coaches, there wasn’t any recruiting going on. Plus DD played 14s in Colorado Springs and most of the coaches were up north for the 16s and 18s. (About 2-3 hours away). This year the 14s are closer to the older girls so it might be different...

But - it was fun. DD got to meet and play with girls from Texas, California, Kansas, Oregon and Arizona (we are from Colorado). She still keeps in touch with one of 2 of the girls and she endeared herself to an umpire that recognized her this year...after not seeing her for over a year. Lol!

I would say do it for the experience, but don’t expect much. They selected 2 girls from each team to play in the All American games. It was fun - but definitely pricey. If money is an issue skip it. DD is playing again this year....but honestly - I don’t know why I agreed to it! Lol!

It is the Sparkler sorry I guess I used the wrong name. It's her first time playing with anyone other than a B team and it's a whole new experience. She's a junior and they can talk to her so I guess the more exposure the better. Maybe she'll do something phenomenal and catch someones eye :D.

On another note It's amazing how much more responsive coaches are when you have a known team name attached to your email. My daughter went months with very little response and now with an A team in the email header that has noticeably changed. Not counting any chickens yet. Not even sure I want a big expensive chicken. I think I liked it better when she was gonna play for the local JUCO .

Oh - and they only play one game - unless they are selected to the All American game...at least that’s how it was last year.

The Sparkler & the Fireworks are part of the same tourney. The All Star games can be fun and may be worth it but...you may not see a college coach at your game. You may not have a college coach actually coaching or working with the team your DD is on...I've seen it go both ways. Your DD may not get many innings in the game depending on her position. If your expectations aren't too high I'd say give it a shot.

DD will be at the Fireworks or Sparkler for the first time this year. Being from the east and never playing against many from west and south, we're looking forward to it!

What is difference between sparkler and fireworks? Does one refer to power pool and other to open pool? I hear people talking about these but never been there and the people don’t seem to know if there is a difference either.
