If a player leaves 1B early in an attempted steal, does this statistically count as a failed stolen base attempt or simply scored as "LE" for left early? Thanks!

Isn't "leaving early" on a pitch - steal attempt or not - a dead ball, no pitch, runner out? If so, I don't see it ever being scored as a "caught stealing". Runner would be out, with the fielder closest to the ball at the time of the infraction, the pitcher in this case, being credited with put out. I may have made up that last bit but I think it's close.

I may be wrong as well, but doesn't the out get recorded to the closest defensive player? In this case 3U? But by no means is it considered caught stealing.

I never knew this would get credited to any player - in GC, I usually just score it as batter out - Other and put LE or LBR

Thanks! I have not been able to find anything in the rule or case book to address this as caught stealing or not.

It's not a caught stealing because there was no steal attempt since the second she was off the base (or, technically, when the umpire sees it) she's out. Not every instance of leaving early happens on a steal attempt.

Also, the pitcher gets credited with the PO. Someone here told me that. I think the rule is that the player with the ball gets credit on certain times of putouts, and in this case, the pitcher is the only one who could possibly have the ball.
