Did my DD catcher make the wrong play?

Yes, it was sarcasm all the way. I guess since plenty of pitchers parents actually say and believe that I should have clarified.

Often I wish there was a sarcasm emoji.

If nothing else take comfort in knowing a few of us nut jobs that do value your catcher daughters and understand that without them our pitchers are nothing.

Thanks, I will show my DD your post.

I always told my young catchers, "You make the throw. If they don't cover the bag I'll find a new (insert position."

Your catcher can't hesitate to see if the receiver is doing their job.

What about 3rd base? DD hestitated on a throw to 3rd because the 3B wasn’t at the base. My opinion is that if she throws and no one is there, that’s a run so you should hestitate.

If there's a runner at 2B, F5 needs to be expecting that there might be a throw if the runner goes. F5 needs to get there.

Pickoffs are a little different then stealing. Baserunner running throw the ball.

Just behind home plate
Top of the seventh inning, tie score, two outs, runner on 1st. Runner takes off from first. DD sees she has plenty of time to make a throw down to second. She makes a good throw to the first base side of 2nd and the ball beats the runner there. Unfortunately the shortstop did not move in time the cover the throw, and was not at 2nd when the ball arrived. Ball goes into the outfield and the runner makes it to third.

The batter then strikes out two pitches later, so no harm done in the end.

After the game to coach started yelling at DD for making that throw.

My question, is any there a reason, in this situation, that a catcher should not make that throw to second?

As a catcher, we're taught to make the throw if the runner is going and let the fielder get to it. Also, the Shortstop is taught to be the first one to catch the ball, second is supposed to back up and if that fails, then the center fielder backs both of them.

If that happened on the team I play for in either travel or high school, I'm not going to be the one catching flack from the coach for botching that play (unless the error is my fault for throwing the ball into the dirt for example)...it's going to be either the shortstop or second because they should have been there to make the play.
