14u players that play like 10u

On the third scrimmage weekend of the spring and after a tournament, 1/3 of the players on my daughter's 14u team execute like 10u players, and not even very good ones.

A number of new players were brought into the organization last fall, some of whom did not seem impressive to me. An assistant coach told me in the fall that the everyone involved at the top of the organization felt these players had potential. Now after a full fall ball schedule, weekly winter workouts, and more than a month of outdoor practice in the spring, I think many of the girls are not playing any better and some are playing worse.

Please tell me if this type of play should be acceptable for a mid-level B team: a first basemen who can't catch a ball that was thrown right to her mitt at chest level, another who stretches down to the dirt for throws that a level and straight to the bag (and doesn't catch the ball), middle infielders who drop to their knees for every ground ball hit to them or who do not pay attention to the lead runner and try to throw to first (and are late) when an easy out could be made at second, not keeping their head in the game and missing an easy chance to double off a runner who left the bag when the ball was caught on a line drive, right at the bag.

My DD loved this team last year, but with the shuffling of players she is left on a terrible team. It is getting to the point I do not want to pay any money to this organization next year if my DD is placed on a team that is so week. My DW and I are starting to wonder what to say to the head of the organization about this situation, and when we should say it.

Any suggestions?

BTW an assistant coach told my DD yesterday she has never coached a girl like my daughter, who practices four or more days a week at home. My DD is not the absolute best player in our area, but I think she deserves to be on a team that plays at a decent 14u level.

Sounds like it is time to move on, they probably don't have the dedication of your daughter. It happens a lot. Don't let her get complacent because the other players are.

I agree with BuckeyeBW. It sounds like your DD would benefit from a better situation.

FWIW, most of your post made me think of my DD's high school team. They are great kids and many of them are very good athletes. But they are not softball players. They play because the high school has limited options for them in the spring. But as soon as the last game is over, they will pack their gloves in their garages or basements and not touch them again for another 6 to 8 months.

Best of luck with your DD's decision!

If your DD is 14U, sounds like she could move up to showcase in the fall anyway. At that point, it's no longer about weekend trophies, but instead getting her on the best team she can make that will play on the top fields for exposure.

If this org is a strong showcase org, then it might be worth staying and getting on one of their showcase teams. Otherwise, time to start putting out feelers for the fall tryouts.

My DD middle school team has its first game of the season this week, but from what I remember about last year's MS team, it wasn't quite this bad.

I wish I could say all the kids on her TB team are good kids. I can't. When she previously played for this organization's 12u and 14u teams it was a great bunch of kids, who didn't always play great, but they tried hard. The parents from both teams were also quality people. Before this season it seemed the organization did a great job of picking worthwhile players from good families.

She has said she does not want to leave this organization, hoping there will be a quality team next year. Do you have any advice on how to approach the head of the organization with our concerns?

I assume your organization has multiple teams, just scout the other teams and see if there might be a better fit even if she needs to move up an age group.

That maybe the way to go, though it will break her heart to leave the coaches she loves. I think she is becoming aware that remaining might not be a good option.

The head of the organization decides who plays on which team, and it is a very small organization. Last year the decisions we well made, this year, this new team of returning players and new players did not result in a good mix.
