This really sucks for the player though. We're back to morse code and trying to figure out a coach's intent vs just being told what a coach really wants. I'm perfectly fine from anything official having to wait until the desired deadline. However, the power should be in the hands of the player. If she shows interest in a school she should be allowed to show it and the coach either reciprocate or deny that interest. Doesn't seem so difficult to me.

And you can still do what you described in your Junior year.

So, from the perspective of a 2022 graduate, what should my DD be doing now as she heads into the summer before 9th grade? We are planning on her attending a summer "prospect" camp for catchers this summer at one school she is interested in and I am considering having her fill out the prospective recruit online form for another. Is that the best course of action for now?

I would say yes. Instead of just filling out the prospective recruit form have her send emails to the staff. Make sure she knows how their season is going and go ahead and flip and email now. If she shows she knows something about the program it shows she does have interest and isn't part of a mass batch of copy and paste emails she sent out. Follow up each week or two and make sure she sends out her schedules this summer.

I would also tell her to expand her list. This link, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_NCAA_Division_I_softball_programs , Lists every DI school that sponsors softball and you can find the same thing for the other divisions. You can sort it by state and find schools from all levels she might be interested in. Keep narrowing her list as she eliminates based on her educational goals as she gets a little older. She is in even better shape than my 2021 DD because she has an extra year to catch someones eye.
