So last night's Braves game - Freddie Freeman hits a hard fly ball to the wall and OF gets there and gets the ball in his glove but as he drops his arm, the ball comes out. They awarded FF with a triple. It was actually going to be a really hard ball to get to so it was amazing he did but just surprised it wasn't scored an error..the ball was in his glove?

Nixxy, know you are talking MLB but after watching a lot more NCAA soft ball the last couple years I think you might be shocked at how liberal the scoring is, especially in the early season.

I know I have seen much tougher scoring in tb on numerous teams dd’s were on, and I always preferred that....

Either way your kid is getting on base. I like to include ROE in my own sort of OBA. If there really is a 20-1 differential for ROE I want to give the kid credit for getting on base 19 extra times.

Slappers should have a sub category to count “forced errors”. Some of their ground balls are just plain botched, but often times their speed leads to a case of the yips and the fielders make errant throws.

Was watching our local HS play a couple years ago (DD had already graduated, so no dog in the fight) sitting near the dugout. Batter, who is a good player, hits a weak line drive to the SS, who just drops it. I hear HC tell the scorekeeper that's a hit... WTH? The line drive was no harder than a thrown ball hahahaha yeah HS ball

My DD is a first year 12U player and I keep the book on GameChanger. I have one parent constantly complaining about how stingy I am when it comes to hits and errors. He was really complaining last night when he thought his DD should have gotten a hit, but she hit it right to the SS and it went off her glove into LF. That's an E all day. Apparently he didn't pay attention to the fact I gave 3 errors to my DD who was playing 3rd base for the first time in 3 months.

You just described how LynkSpyder was born. I kept iScore for the team for stat purposes. I got tired of parents complaining in the middle of the game on how I scored. So I started recording the games and scoring at home. And the rest, as they say, is history.

A common misconception. The quick definition of an error is a failure to make a routine play, but it is NOT a failure to make an exceptional one. As you said, the fact that he got to the ball at all was amazing, so had he made the catch, it would have been "exceptional", right? So, his failure to reel that in is NOT an error.

Even a grounder in the infield can be hit so hard, or even so soft or with a bunch of spin, that a failure to field it and get an out is NOT an error. I saw plays not made in the WCWS that were scored as hits that "the pitcher's mom" keeping score on your average travel ball team would have called an error 99% of the time.

It depends. If it was a really a routine grounder, then yeah...an error. If it was a hard hit ball that the SS barely got a glove on, then no error.

My DD recently hit a ball at the 3B who was playing well inside the bag. The ball was hit pretty hard and took an unusual bounce...3B couldn't react quickly enough and it went off her foot and into LF. It was called an ROE by our scorekeeper. I'm pretty sure that between the scorekeeper and myself, I'm the only one who has fielded hard-hit balls at 3B during a game. I don't know about you, but I've found that most parent scorekeepers don't have much actual playing experience, and their bar for "routine" is often a bit too high.

Other side of the coin: number nine hitter finally cranks one over the center fielders head (who was playing pretty shallow) for a triple. Coach's significant other scores it an error. When questioned by a media person sitting next to her asked "an error? really how is that an error?" the answer was "well in my opinion she should have been deeper then she could have made the catch. The kicker was the hitter was on the team she was scoring for. The only thing I can fathom was that she was trying to justify keeping the girl in the nine slot.

Play softball? Of course not, we didn't have boy's fastpitch when I grew up. Play baseball? Yes. Had hart hit balls hit at me, dove for balls, tracked them down in the OF, etc. I'm fairly tough on fielders and have had some complaints that some errors should have been called hits, but I don't apologize for expecting that a player should be able to field what I believe most of us would consider a routine play. One parent of a 10U player who played up wasn't happy with some of the errors we (I'm not the only scorekeeper for us) ruled on, but I couldn't fairly evaluate her by considering her age. If your at a middle infield position in 12U, you have to make the plays an average 12U player would make. For your play, without seeing it, I have no idea how I would rule, but I do take the tough hops into consideration every time they happen. If it truly eats her up I'd be inclined to call it a hit.
