I'm pretty surprised at what gets scored a hit in NCAA sometimes, especially in early season play.

We are pretty lucky in hs ball. The scorebook for our team is pretty good to go.

Some years, we may play a team 4 times (regular season, county tourney, conference tourney, Sectional). At the end of the year, I may see some girl with a .400+ batting average that I do not even remember from our games. I check our book, and she may have been 2 for 15 in our games...she must have hit .600+ in the games not against us

Last year, we played a team that had 5 kids supposedly batting above .400. They went 2 for 18 in our game and did not swing like .400+ hitters.

And we win about 1/2 of our games, so it is not like we are just shutting down good players.

We are small town and play other small town schools. It always interesting comparing newspaper articles. A player listed as having 2 hits in our newspaper may show 4 hits in another newspaper or vice versa.

I have seen that this year also. A reporter that was at our game, and interviewed a couple of girls afterwards, wrote up an article about the game that had final score wrong, an inning that had the number of runs wrong, and stats about hits in an inning wrong.

Big towns are fun too. Lots of padding of stats goes on for post season awards. It’s not just batting averages. Some will double K’s and cut in half BB’s for pitchers.

Always fun to compare the progression of HS/TB stats for a quick smh moment.

Actual Stats Observed --> Stats in Box Score --> Stats listed for eoy awards -->Stats on player's TB profile sheet --> Stats listed on players college bio page (not to mention the sudden appearance of eoy HS awards the player never actually earned).

Good times.

Interesting topic. As the dad of a high school pitcher, I can tell you that it is painful sometimes to see some of the plays she is faced with. In a matter of two games, there were six bunt attempts that would have been routine outs for her travel team. But the high school 3b refuses to charge the ball. Based on my understanding of "ordinary effort", I would be charging them all as errors. But the official scorer has marked all of them as hits.
who would you give the error to? The 3b who didn't charge the ball or the pitcher who didnt?
