One of the local rec leagues our area just launched an agressive campaign to encourage pitchers to wear facemasks.
While I understand and appreciate the campaign what's starting to happen is now girls who do not wear facemasks are beginning to be ridiculed for choosing not to wear a mask
Over the last 6 months I've hear the following from kids, parents and umpires.

You're stupid for not wearing a mask..
You must not care about your teeth..
Didn't your kid have braces.. why no mask?
The girls at this age can really hit, where's her mask?
Can't your parents afford a mask - really heard that one
Don't be ashamed to wear a mask
Your not fast enough in reaction time to not wear a mask

And the list goes on and on...
Whats happened is in our intense desire to make girls feel comfortable wearing a mask we've begun to shame kids for not wearing one.

Poor rationale and needs to end.

Or you can be our Rec league. Our District mandated mandatory mask rules:
6/8/10u - All Infielders
12/14 - Corners/Pitcher
16/18- Pitchers

I’m not a fan and I run the local league. This came from the district and they are pushing for it to be state and then nation wide. My kid will wear a mask when pitching and playing 1st. I paid for her teeth. It is what it is. However, no one should be shamed into wearing a mask and It really should be the parent/player decision and nobody else.

I am a facemask fan, DD has always wore one before anyone else. I do not care what other players do.

It is a rec. Leaque what are they doing? Just make a rule.

Something like you are describing DD might not wear one, blank you.

As far as I can tell she has not been uncomfortable wearing one but what you desribe I could see her being so and being criticised for wearing one.

It's a parent and kids decision, unless it's league mandated... but the shaming is real and is disgraceful.
Add... I have no problems whatsoever with facemasks..

I love masks. I hate shaming in any direction. I think leagues can make rules because leagues pay for their insurance. As parents we can choose which league to participate in.

Hate to say it but welcome to what the face mask wearers have put up with for years!

Oh, she must be afraid of the ball.
She will never play on my TB team if she wears a face mask.
She’ll never make the high school team because the coach hates face masks.
Your daughter will never be recruited because she wears a facemask.
Oh look how dumb she looks with that mask on.
How can she even see the ball.
She must be weak.

Yep, that’s what I’ve heard over the years. It goes both ways and yeah, it sucks.

I can say that I've Never heard that type of shaming..
But I've heard an awful lot going the other way.

No kid should be shamed either way..

Certainly adults should know better than to say the things I posted in the first comment..

This. The Rec League insurance carrier is probably pushing this (I was in the business and on a board before, and the trend is towards masks.) But I'm the last one to judge anyone else for their honest, good faith belief one way or the other.
