In your experience what is the typical roster size for a 10U team? My DD's team has 10 kids and one of them now has some undisclosed foot injury ( I say undisclosed because the kid was asked about it by her teammates and apparently she said her Mom said not to say what it was....maybe her Mom is Scott Boras??). They also have another kid who is coming off a stress fracture in her foot, which appears to be healing but who knows....

Coach doesn't pick up, which I can understand, and I also understand carrying a small roster size at this age but man it seems they are cutting it awful close with only 10 kids on the team.

I think 12 is a really good size for a 10U roster. You have to have nine on the field at all times, and ten is cutting it way too close. If you have one kid hurt or sick, you are at minimums.

Yes, 12 or at the minimum 11 was my thinking as well. They had 12 in the Fall but cut 3 kids and only picked up one.

We are 11u now but at 10u we had 12. I think it depends on the talent level how many to have. We had 10 that were similar in ability and 2 more that were behind them. We played everyone every game, which I did not agree with HC during a few games. I do not think you have to get every girl in every game. 12 is the right number if you have 12 good players but the more you take that you have to hide, the worse you are.

At this age I don't care about winning so much as I do about my DD getting experience facing live pitching etc and if they have to miss tournaments because they don't have enough kids well then
that isn't good imo.

You never want to miss a tourney due to injuries, never been a problem for our team. We had a winter tournament where we were down a girl because of flu, we just picked up a player for that tourney as insurance. We only carry 10 this year but would like to have an 11th.

I think 12 is good number too.

Biggest general conflict is a couple of them going on vacation at the same time or together.

Rules question, I do have rule handy ...

I know if a player gets hurt you can play with 8 players, are you allowed to start game with 8 players?

In all of the organizations I am familiar with, no. You must start with nine but can continue the game with 8. I am sure someone on here knows better than I do though!

In all organizations I'm familiar with (USSSA and ASA), you CAN start a game with 8 players, but will take an out for the "absent" ninth batter each time through the order.

I would say 11 as a perfect number, but knowing the chances for injuries, disgruntled parents pulling their DD from the team, vacations, and conflicts with any other sports the girls may play, 12 is probably better. 11 in a perfect world imo
