First TB tournament this past weekend and the park we played at - none of the scoreboards worked.
We're a first year team that just transitioned from rec so I'm not sure how common that is.
In rec, there'd be a few instances where the scoreboard wouldn't be working and it's always tough for the girls to follow when they don't know the count, outs and score.
I'm sure they need to be following the game a little closer so they know but I was curious how that affects how the game goes and how they play..
What's a good way for them to follow everything better?

We don't play in too many parks where they actually keep score, even in the better tournaments we play in. Don't take this the wrong way; we want our girls to get used to knowing their count and not worry about score. They can always ask the ump or coach if they need to. My DD team has been playing TB for 4 years now and we are in 11u. This is the first year they really know the count and situation. It is fun to watch them play an inexperienced team that doesn't know and have to be told to go to first on ball 4 and come off the field when they get 3 outs. We used to get on the girls often, "know your count", "know how many outs you have". This goes hand in hand with "know where your play is" to me and is part of the maturation process in softball. Not trying to give you a sermon, but like I said, we rarely have scoreboards that work.

Our home park has scoreboards that work, all that is lacking is someone to volunteer to run them. Someone just needs to ask for the controls and have at it.

Very seldom does anyone volunteer and even then I do not think they do balls and strikes after a couple innings. It is nice knowing the score. What is the score gets asked a fair amount some games?

Batter and 3rd base coach should be able to keep track of count and outs without a scoreboard. If they get tied up just ask home plate umpire.

Also, if you encounter scoreboards in use, don't trust the count. Volunteers can be slow to post pitches or miss them altogether. Base coaches should always know the count and give a reminder to the batter, especially when the board is wrong.

In travel I really haven't seen a scoreboard in use except at Disney and a couple of other World Series.

The girls know what is going on. So do the coaches. Or at least they learn quickly.

I am seeing more and more travel teams bringing the StoreStix fence scoring board. Honestly it seems to be more for the parents than it is for the girls, but if you want to keep the score, here you go:

No problem - I know our girls need to pay better attention. We try to get our catcher to do better about letting the rest of them know what's up. There were a couple of times where we had to let the ump know it was the last out though :/
I just am curious if it would have changed our girls' mindset knowing the score or not. Definitely one of the many things they will need to work on next tournament.

DD plays basketball in the winter and there's been times when the scoreboard wasn't working for that - that was fun ;) DH had to call out the time at different intervals..

I've always been one of the people who does the scoreboard - since 8U. We played a few times at a park where their scoreboards weren't installed yet and they had something similar that would hang from the box. It only tracked inning and score but useful. The other parents always asked me the score, etc since I do GC for the team..

The scoreboards at the Louisville Slugger complex in Peoria have clocks on them. Great for knowing exactly where you're at in a timed game.
