I think the key thing to remember is that everyone's experience is different, even within the same school. DD's hitting coach uses some of his HS players as helpers at lessons. One of them is a senior this year who isn't playing because in her words "It's too political. I was on JV as a junior so I don't stand a chance at playing time on varsity this year. They've never given me a chance. I'm not one of the favorites" She's telling all of the students that go to her HS this. Some of them go into tryouts worried about it. Some people just can't grasp that they're not good enough.

Joe [OP] wrote - "DW who is always the voice of reason said something that really resonated with DD today. She said "Why worry about HS ball? You goals are bigger". It took me a little while to understand that one but now that I do, I agree with her. "

Seems like the thread drifted. I may be mistaken, but I think the point may to keep things in perspective. Softball is one part of the HS experience. A tool to accomplish the larger goal of becoming an educated and productive citizen. I've never seen his DD play, but know she is with a highly regarded TB program as a pitcher, Im sure she will be fine in HS SB. If it becomes a wedge or cart to provide long term goals, more power to her.

I am assuming that college is the ultimate goal here which is why your family doesn't feel like you need high school ball. My DD is also a Freshman and we had the same thought going into the season but there was never any doubt whether she was going to participate or not. While it is true that a player does not need school ball to make it to college my DD is getting a LOT of attention for her performance since the season started 3 weeks ago. Some of the colleges already knew about her and some didn't. All in all I can honestly say that school ball has elevated her recruiting interest a ton. So if your DD could be a dominate player during the season from what I have seen so far school ball will or can only help your DD get interest from colleges.

The reason I keep posting on the threads about HS ball is because I totally bought the idea that HS ball was a "meritocracy", until DD#1 played HS Ball and I found out (in our case) it wasn't. every school is different and you've got to make your own decisions based on what you see, not what somebody on the internet says.

DD made the varsity team as a freshman. It was probably a very tough decision as there were 3 other really good freshman pitchers along with one senior and one sophomore. What I was trying to say in the original post is that the goals that most of the players have are bigger than making varsity and that varsity doesn't make or break a kids chance at pitching in college. My DD is a pretty good pitcher but she would have a hard time cracking a roster on some of the teams in our state and others... she would pitch every game. That's a reflection on how varied the talent is at the High School level. That's the bigger lesson here in my opinion.

Right Here For Now
My DDs goals are bigger as well.

To give her everything on the field for her community/city.

To get the program to state for the first time ever. 1 win short her freshman year last year.

To add more all area, and all conference patches to her lettermens jacket.

It drives me crazy all these posts about high school ball this, and that. Get your asses out there and do it for your school. Go put on a show for your friends, for your friends parents, for all the teachers and others in the community that love to watch. My DD plays in only one or two local tourney's for TB per year, the rest are out of state. Its cool that the rest of her family can watch her play during school ball.

My two cents.

Except when she doesn't get a chance to do any of that due to politics and incompetent coaching like in my area of the country. I hope your DD truly does get this opportunity to achieve all that she wants without the outside influences that are so common around here.
