1. The Ghost is a pretty hot bat, but not a giant difference-maker in comparison to all of the other top-level bats. It's still the indian a LOT more than it is the arrow.

2. Not one college coach cares about what plastic trophies a kid won in 12U. Not one.

Right Here For Now
Ok....I'd like to give fair warning, this is a rant so please feel free to skip entirely if you'd like.

I'm an AC for a 2nd year 12U team and we're a pretty solid team. There is another team that there is some history with; our HC coached several of the girls from the other team a couple of years ago. Every time we're in the same tournament we'll always hear about how we're in the easier pool. We've played the other team twice up until recently and beat them both times. After each game, there has always been some snide comments on social media about how the officials must have been relatives, or how a freak accident of a glove coming apart was the difference.

The latest was in a championship game, where we once again apparently played in an easy pool. We won the game by a few, not a blow out by any stretch.

During our 1st at bat, the HC calls time out and asks the ump to check one of our girls bats, says it's illegal. It's a ghost and we're playing USSSA. He's right....the ump looks at the bat and says he doesn't see anything wrong with it and lets our girl use it. She goes 1 for 3 with a single, no RBI's and No runs.

We're up by a few during the end of regulation and they start trying to quick pitch when our batter is barely getting their feet in the box. They get away with it for a couple of batters, until we get our hitters to hold time until they're settled. When I say something to one of the other AC's, he says they were trying to get in another inning.

End of the game, we win...everyone shakes hands like good boys and girls and goes on their way.

Talk to parents after the game and I guess one of the coaches on the other team was texting one of our parents like the day before the tournament asking if they wanted to come over to them. She said no thanks. Another coach was actually asking one of our parents how our hitters dealt with changing pace of pitchers. We had 6 hits off them and they changed pitcher every inning. We did ok.

Final straw.....today the HC gets a PM from one of the AC's stating that they have a Ghost too but were told they couldn't use it in the last tournament, so they didn't even bring it, and how great a bat it is and provides a huge advantage. Our ump was wrong and we shouldn't have been able to use the bat. Cause that made the difference.

I'd like nothing better than to have a team that we can battle back and forth and have a cordial relationship with, but it's just frustrating when you know that regardless of the outcome after the game, there will always be an excuse as to why it turned out the way it did. Can't just say good game, you got a good team. Congrats. Grownups really screw youth sports up.

Okay. I've been there done that. I've coached everything from 6U rec/T-ball up through 18U showcase teams. Here's the real skinny. If you're a well known organization, or in a local tournament held by your own organization, chances are, you have the easier draw more than likely. I know this seems cynical, but it's the truth...at least in my area and many others across this country. They want one of their own to win their own tournament if possible. I'm not saying this is the case in your particular situation, just that I've seen it time and time again.

I've also seen where "sister" teams have gone with an easier bracket with the TD's particular knowledge that their teams can't compete with them so have given them an easier bracket.

I've seen where everyone actually had a blind draw and it was everyone's to win.

I've seen where teams with little reputation were put on the outlying fields 25-45 minutes away from the main fields at college showcases where those teams would actually beat the supposed Gold/Elite teams at college showcase tournaments because they've beat them many times in the past at "lower" tournaments but never got the recognition for it.

Quit whining. What others say about you and your team does not affect how you play. There are always others that can and WILL beat you and at 12U, there's no reason for it. At that age, it means nothing in the long run. Keep them together, continue to develop them (which is what 12u is about) and turn them into the top contender at the next age level you envision them being. What anybody else says only comes from jealousy because they weren't a part of what you have going on.

I used to be the same way. Then, one day I realized how miserable I was constantly being upset about something that had to do with 12u softball. So I stopped being mad. Stopped caring about the petty crap and just focused on loving my kid and cherishing every second I get to watch her play. And man...has that made a world of difference on so many levels.

It’s girls softball. It’s an incredible game, that will give you and your daughter incredible memories. Don’t let those memories be clouded by crap that doesn’t mean a damn thing. Trust me, once you let go, it’s pretty awesome to just enjoy the game and watch your kid play it.

TB (in all sports, softball, baseball and basketball) has increased at least three things since the days in which I played: Level of competition, cost and parent involvement. One of these things is good and the other two are bad...

Oh PUHLEEEAAASEEE! I love you dude but they cheat like no tomorrow whether it's inside the rules or not:p Of course, I'm a Steeler's fan so I'm supposed to say that...lol

LOL. Evil Bill used mind control to get Haley and Tomlin to call a pass/interception instead of kicking a game tieing field goal with 8 second left. Being from that neck of the woods, at least your not a Browns fan!

Where have you been hiding? :)

I bought my DD her second LS Xeno last year, and she hits fine with it, so I don't spend much time chasing the latest and greatest. In fact, my bat shopping is always done late in the late Fall, when the current-year models are at their cheapest.

I know good equipment can make a difference, but $350 for a softball bat is ridiculous. That much for one that isn't approved across all the larger FP associations is insane. As is often the case, I learned something with this thread; be on the lookout for this bat during USSSA tournaments.

Here's something else to learn...Don't pay full retail price for bats. ;)

I believe I clearly said that I DON'T do that!

However, if you want the latest and hottest thing, you will pay full retail, or very close to it.

My point is that you DON'T have to pay full retail. Not even for the latest and hottest thing. I wound consider the Ghost in the "latest and hottest" category. I know, for a fact, that the Ghost can easily be purchased for less than $300...new, with full warranty.
