DD hasn't been able to throw much due to her chest problem, but we have started throwing a lttle bit the last couple of weeks. Last weekend after casually playing catch and starting to pitch easily, DD called me over because her arm had become numb from the elbow to hand and her hand was turning purple. I looked at it and I swear it looked all bruised/purple and was changing color as I looked at it! The purple had started to fade when I got the idea to take a picture.File Jan 18, 7 07 39 AM.jpg
Something similar happened a few weeks ago after hitting. This time, Her whole metatarsal and the knuckles of her fingers on her right hand were purple. Has this sort of thing happened to any of your DDs? Is it indicative of a problem?
We're going to see a neurologist at the end of the month re: her continued chest/rib pain, so I'll be asking then. I just didn't know if this was nit uncommon in pitchers. Also, it wasn't cold here, she was wearing a tee shirt because she was getting hot.

My DD plays HS ball with a young lady that this happens to. I am not sure if the hand goes numb or not but it does turn purple. I know that they have had countless tests performed and went to numerous doctors without any luck on a diagnosis. She has been battling this for years from what I understand.

This is definitely not something I would mess around with. See a doctor as sluggers has suggested. My DD was having some issues a couple of years ago. She was feeling numbness in the pinkie and ring finger on her right hand. She was diagnosed with medial epicondylitis with a minor case of ulnar nerve entrapment (golfer's elbow). After 4 weeks of rest, she was good to go and has not had a problem since. Best of luck to a speedy recovery!

I had surgery for this years ago. Lots of numbness but never any color changing and I had a very severe case. I’d get her in to see someone as soon as you can

I know of a pitcher who played for Kansas - had to drop softball end of her sophomore year because she couldn't play anymore. She did have surgery done - I think summer between freshman & sophomore year - something about nerves being pinched in shoulder or somewhere in that vicinity. The numbness still came back so she dropped out of softball. Great lady & athlete though.

Found her blog - she was diagnosed with thoracic outlet syndrome. Here is her blog entry regarding the condition and stopping softball.

DD plays HS ball with a girl who had the same thing, although not a pitcher. She did play tennis though. Had a complicated surgery where the removed a small muscle group and her top rib on throwing arm side to improve circulation and relieve pain/numbness. Long recovery, but she is back at it and is 100%. I believe her surgery was done in ST Louis. It came down to have surgery or give up sports.

This is what one doctor believes to be the case with my DD’s teammate.
