A little back story first. This is a D2 committed SS/power hitter. Last year this player sat out the entire 2017(spring, summer and fall) with a torn ACL from basketball (another story). This player has not pitched in 2 years nor does not want to pitch. She has been rehabbing for nearly a year to get ready for her last HS season and this summer before she heads off to college. We really missed her last year, and missed the playoffs by one game, which she could have made a difference. Coach asks for a meeting with the parents and AD present which was odd, too to get a progress report on her knee. She has been medically cleared to play softball. The AD then tells the parents that they need their DD to pitch this year and were adamant about it. Parents said under no circumstances will she pitch and put undo pressure on a newly healed knee. They do not want to put her scholly in jeopardy due to an injury. BTW our #1 pitcher is out this season due to a surgery for a bone cyst in her femur, hence the pressure for this player to pitch. The coaches wouldn't relent, so the parents pulled her from the team. The same AD couldn't even put together a simple NLI signing party for this player either. So there was already some resentment before this meeting even started. This soon to be season keeps getting worse, and we haven't even started!

Oh, what a shame. I don't blame the parents for saying no. It is not worth doing more damage to an already damaged knee (because we all know that knees are never the same once injured). I hope she can keep getting reps with her TB team so she doesn't get rusty. Good luck to your DD this season!

Sounds like there was no other option. Either pitch or don’t play. She had to make a tough decision, but sounds like she did what was best for her future. I wish her luck!

Does not sound like she will miss much. I have seen a few athletes due to necessitate step up and become pretty decent pitchers. One way to look at this is by her sitting out someone will have the opportunity to be that player that steps up.

I actually think that these parents need to go to the school board. This coach wants to put this player in jeapordy of further injury by pitching her. She has not pitched nor practiced and, while she can play a position, she isn't driving and landing on a repaired knee at any given position. This is the type of stuff the school board needs to hear.

My daughter is also recovering from a knee injury this past fall. The player bio is almost identical from what you described when compared with my daughter. (middle infielder, power hitter and pitcher) If a coach told her that she was REQUIRED to pitch without any regard to her injury then she just wouldn't play for that coach.

pattar, when I talk to parents, I also make sure that the AD is at the meeting. As I illustrated here last spring, what is said in these meetings often tend to come out as something else when emotional parents are involved. The AD serves as a person who is a witness to exactly what is said. In this case, I am shocked that the AD didn't side with the parents. My AD would without reservation.

I don't have a problem with him being there..I do have a problem with him being the one to convey the message.
