Depends on basement.:) DW nicked the idea of pitching in living room, where is perfect circle when we need him?

If she will play in these condition, she needs to practice in these conditions.

Our basement has less useable room than our living room.

I would not let me DDs play in 12° weather, with a wind chill of -3°. That what is by us right now. Forecast high is for 19°, with a wind chill of 3°.

Does any organization allow games to be played in weather like that? Are there guidelines for when games are to be cancelled because of the cold?

DD will often pitch in our yard in 40 degree weather. But at 19 we will stick with the cages. Today we will do some pitching and hitting in the indoor comfort... During the week she will do some pitching in the basement. We set up a bownet and she pitches from a distance of approximately 15 feet. Works good to get her reps in. Although I am not a huge fan of hitting off of tees, she will do some of that as well. We typically go to the cage two or three times per week during the winter.

Added: In the past we typically tried to play at least one dome tournament each winter to get the players some game action. Playing in a dome is a slightly different game, but it is fun. We are not planning to do any this year...

I don't know if there's a strict rule, but coaches around here tend to not play HS games if it's under 40. Since I've been coaching, rain/bad fields have been more of an issue though. I don't think we had any days last year where the weather was cold, but otherwise nice (no rain/snow, dry fields, etc).

Still, I'm not really sure what anybody gets out of playing a game in 30 degree weather. Nobody wants to be there. Everybody is miserable. It's just everybody going through the motions trying to get the game over. If it's not a tournament game or a necessary conference game, what's the point?

It would be pretty uncomfortable practicing in the cold. I’m not sure why softball would be different than winter sports for injury other than kids aren’t used to it.

Seems very strange not to be concerned about the cold. I thought it can also be very dangerous.

Seems a little strange to be so concerned about it. I am far more concerned about tournaments in July and August when the temp is above 100 degrees. Dehydration is far more concerning than cold weather injuries. Players can bundle up between innings in the field. I think they DO need to stay warm and stretched out when the temperature gets down to about 30. Outside of extreme temps or wind chill it there is not much to worry about. Extremities (hands and feet) and exposed skin like ears and noses can get cold. When I have seen teams playing in below freezing temps the umps usually relax the uniform standards and let the girls wear non-matching sweatshirts over their jerseys and hats to cover their heads.

The only weather rule I know of is because of lighting, might be local rule. If anyone sees lighting done for 20 minites, clock restarts if another lightin in sky.

Why do you assume I am dismissing the dangers of heat when I ask the question about cold? I am also far more concerned about playing when the temperature is above 100°, but does that mean I should not ask the question about the cold? If the cold is simply not dangerous, then that is good to know.

I did not start this thread asking the question about the overall dangers of the cold, I was asking about whether or not it was a good idea to practice below a certain temperature. Being aware of the possibility of cold weather injuries, is it worth practicing below a certain temperature?
