Lots of time is spent discussing early recruiting in softball, but I was watching MLB Network this morning and a thought occurred to me.

Kevin Maitan is a 17 year old SS prospect from Venezuela. He was caught up in the sanctions against the Braves and made a free agent by MLB. The Angels have signed him. So, before this kid turns 18 he's signed two pro contracts worth nearly $7,000,000. If memory serves, several years ago the Reds signed Yorman Rodriguez as a 15 year old out of Venezuela for $2,500,000.

In that light, maybe verbaling a 14 year old really isn't so bad!

If they offered my kid 7 million to verbal at 14 to a college which is the best in the world (here best college = best baseball league) I would probably let her do it.....

Well at least they are getting something for their commitment. If a verbal was an actual commitment versus a pinkie promise to give a kid something maybe if you know, I am still coaching or something better hasn't come along - then you might have something...

I've said this here before. The USA Elite sports system associated with education is the stupidest sports system in the world. I know how it happened, but the 'why' education and elite sports are so tightly linked makes zero sense.

And nothing dumber than hearing some idiot commentator talk about how 'he needed an extra year in college to mature' - especially in the NBA where the American player has 3 European teammates who have been pros and have been paid since they were 14 or 15 years old in the club system run everywhere else in the world. Apparently being paid and playing pro didn't hurt European teenagers but will ruin USA teenagers.
