I have a curious question about the recruiting process and what is ok, likely, etc. My DD is a baseball player, currently a young 14yo Freshman. She's considered playing softball in college only, simply to help pay for schooling. I know of some girls that have gotten good scholarships and never really played SB, going straight from HS baseball to college SB. There is a local college that holds interest as my DD has no desire to "go away" to college. It's a small'ish Christian school, however I was surprised to find out they're D1. My DD is an AP/Honor student that has never gotten below an A in her life, so the academics are there. My questions are around contacting the coach. I assume it's ok for me to email the coach. After that I assume the question is to ask if there are any camps my DD can attend? Last, does it help to say that room and boarding are not a consideration because we live about 10 miles from the school? TIA

You can email the coach but I do not think that they can email you back during the current recruiting period. Have the high school coach email the college coach since they can talk to each other about your DD or you can find out the college coaches number and have your DD call them. If you find their phone number you can send them a text stating that you will be calling at this time XXXX. The coaches are allowed to answer and chat but can not call your daughter so setting up a time is the way to go.

Not necessarily. My DD was coached by a D1 player who lived 10 minutes from her school. The player had to live in the dorms, with the entire team, a requirement of being on the team.

This really depends on the coach and what they allow. DD was initially committed to a local school and the coach had no problem with her living at home. When she was at her JUCO she had a couple of teammates that lived off campus.

If she just wants it to pay for college, have her take on a part time job instead. Her grades will get her academic money. If they don’t love it she’d be miserable as a college softball player.

At DD’s school freshman were required to live on campus in the dorms. After that they could live anywhere and most rent apartments.

Have your DD fill out the recruiting questionnaire on the team's website. You will get on their email list for camps. If you do any research, you might be able to find camp info yourself. Most schools do some type of winter camp. Where does the team fall on the Massey rating? https://www.masseyratings.com/csoft/ncaa-d1/ratings

Does her skill set match or project up to the skill set of the current players on the team? She needs to be evaluated.

Do you think she will play HS ball? Does she play baseball on a TB team? If not, she will need to play softball at some point to keep her skills up. There was a girl that played baseball up until 9th grade at my DD's school. She then played softball. She couldn't make the adjustment to softball and frankly wasn't up to par as the other elite softballers on the team. And I use the term elite very loosely!

You may want to put her in softball for at least a year so she can make the adjustment. The hitting is completely different and takes most at least a year to catch on. You have way less time to react in softball, the swing is much shorter, and the load is much sooner. If she knows any softball pitchers, it would be a good idea to practice before going to a camp.

Fielding is a lot easier of a transition.

I was wondering about this as well. Is softball not an option where you live? I would try to get her onto a competitive TB team to let her see how her baseball skill set translates as well as how well she hits. A coach would be taking a huge chance offering money to a player who has only played baseball and there are no guarantees how she will assimilate to softball.
