DD pitches and is fast and a good base runner. She absolutely loves running bases. The coaches who know her well almost never put in a courtesy runner for her. I've always assumed for pitchers it's mostly to keep them from getting tired. At our age level anyway I don't ever see pitchers leave the base to go warm up, usually they just do the warm ups in the circle at the beginning of the inning. For catchers that plus getting into all that gear was my assumption.

For both pitchers and catchers it can often be about keeping fresh legs. It can also be about minimizing chances for injury, slow/poor base running, getting action for others players, etc.

I always figured it was mostly to minimize chances for injury. Many injuries involve sliding or collisions on the base paths. Good catchers and pitchers aren't easy to find so you want them healthy.

When I coach 1B sometimes I ask the pitcher or catcher if they want a runner and the answer is almost always, "no".

I am all for playing smart so if I have one catcher, or it's really hot, etc. they get a runner. It's only 180 ft. to home plate...the courtesy runner rule should be removed except for days when weather is a factor.

DD catches and pitches and I think has only gotten a CR when the coach wants her to be able to get her gear back on for the next inning. But she's a good baserunner so they don't do it for her much. When she's been catching, she has been CR for our pitcher :/

One thing I would like to point out is there are no courtesy runners in college softball, so having your DD learn to effectively run the bases now could pay dividends later in her career.

You are correct, but when was the last time you saw (talking NCAA Div 1, mostly) a pitcher bat and run the bases? In a great majority of games, the Pitcher is the FLEX player and a DP is used on offense.
At the lower levels, you will see the pitcher on offense more often, but it is still not a majority of the time.

Agree that the number of pitchers hitting at a P5 is limited, but Bob516 's DD is a catcher and they do not get one either...and when was the last time you saw a top D1 team FLEX for their catcher?
