DD is still in rec so rules are a little more lax during the regular season...
We routinely will make lineups and put girls who aren't there at the bottom..and then mention to the ump/HC that whoever is at the bottom and might not show..

EOS tournament game..
Last nite we put a girl who hadn't shown up by game time at the bottom..
Game goes on and when it was the bottom of the lineup, girl hadn't shown up and we went back to the top of our order.
We probably should have mentioned it to the ump or HC but it's such a normal thing in our league that whoever is scoring will just see that the top is back up and cross the girl off..
(Also when I score and see a problem in the lineup - I will always say something to the ump that the other team should have a certain girl up and or ask as soon as a diff batter is up..)
So our leadoff batter gets on...*then* the person doing book for the other team mentions it to the ump that the last batter didn't bat.
I was doing official book and ump asked me and I said the last batter didn't show so we were back at the top.

Discussion went on and we were given a warning since in EOS rules, we have to declare it - umps realize that in regular season play, it's not usually an issue...Otherwise our girl on 1st should have been out..

Later I heard the person scoring that she thought we were all cheaters.
Would ya'll consider that cheating?
Of course now that we know, we'll be better at letting them know as soon as *we* know if a girl won't be there but IMO, she def waited for our girl to get on base to let the ump know. But I don't think we were trying to cheat at all.

She waited to let the ump know because that is what you do.

I don't think what you did was cheating, sounds like an honest mistake - but you have to let them know before the batter is missed, even if there is an understanding.

Cheating is a little harsh but I would follow the rules.

For our League you can take an out or remove the player from the game so a decision needs to be made.

If someone is batting out of order, what happened here, the defense can get a free out if you wait for them to get on base. I wouldn't do it in rec. but each their own.

I think our HC knows the rules and everything but because in the regular season, it's much more laid back and the umps/teams just go with it. If it had been someone other than the lead-off batter, I'd probably have said something right away if it was me scoring another team. I get the rules but it just seems petty to me. I wouldn't do it to another team to just get an out... They don't show up - they were the last batter - lead-off is up - it's pretty clear what happened.
Now if they'd gone through their line-up twice and all of a sudden the batter does show up and they try to bat her - I'd def say something.

I keep score on our team and if I notice an out of order batter I never say anything til they get on base. That's how you get the out.

Regular season does not count. EOS tourney all rules apply to everyone. I wouldn't call you a cheater, but it should be an out. Rules are rules and should be enforced.

Yea - they did give the warning which is fine and honestly we would have taken the out if the umps wanted to give it to us.
I just really took offense to being called cheaters because of it.. We beat them by more than 1 run so it's not like her getting on base won the entire thing for us..

Consider it a learning experience that will make you a better game manager. I told the umpire that a player was reentering the game, but he did not notify the other team. That player reaches base and the other team says that that player is batting out of order. My mistake was that I notified the Ump when she went on to the field rather than when she came up to bat. I never made that mistake again. The more mistakes you make as a coach the better you will be. Failing your way to success! Sounds like I need to make more mistakes...

This past season in the USSSA All-Star WS, you couldn't use a CR unless they weren't playing anywhere else. Not fielding or batting I guess. It was a rule we had never played by since we never have that many girls to just have someone who runs for another player.
Team we played against had a few extra girls and one really fast girl they'd always put in as a PR/CR.
During one inning, because I always try to put their players in their fielding positions, I noticed she was in at 2b? So I had to ask our HC about it and have him ask the ump to see if she would be batting for someone. She wasn't so they had to pull her off the field. I would not necessarily say they were trying to cheat - I don't get what purpose it would have served anyway - but possibly the coach forgot or something - who knows.
Luckily GC likes to inform me when I make changes ;)

How was it a mistake that you notified the umpire when the player went in on defense? You are required to report a substitution ANY time they enter the game regardless of if it is on defense or offense. And you are suppose to notify the umpire and it is their responsibility to report it to the opposing team. Ultimately the only lineup card that counts is the one in the umpires possession. It also would not be a batting out of order situation, it would be an unreported sub.
