While my DD2 prefers pitching, when she plays 3B she has picked up a habit which I think seems to make sense. As the pitcher is in motion and she is getting into ready position, she picks up her left foot, slides it a little to the center line of her body, then extends it out back to where it originally was and goes into ready position.

Besides the fact that I think it looks cool, I thought it was a good way to keep herself from planting her feet back on her heals. Is there any reason she should not do this?

Sounds like a reasonable timing mechanism to get herself ready to make a play. As long as it works for her, she's consistent in her routine, and it doesn't cross her up (for example, it doesn't take away from her ability to charge when batter squares to bunt), I see no reason to stop doing it.

I do not like when fielders are stiff as a board and do not move at all, what your DD is doing sounds reasonable to me.

Mine plays 3B and has a similar version of pre-movement.
