They let you play on it? Nice. 8 YO DD and I went to the local HS complex this summer to practice and about 30 minutes in the HS coach came charging in telling us we cannot play on the field without permission. Must have cameras there or something. Field wasn't locked and had no signs saying not to play on it. She acted like we were 2 teenagers getting ready to graffiti the place..was about ready to tell her that if she wanted her team to win some games once in a while she might want to let kids practice on it..but amazingly I was able to bite my tongue..

If I am not mistaken, unless it is a private school, HS facilities are paid for with tax money. Therefore everyone in that district should be allowed to use the facilities, within reason. All you should have to do is contact the proper person and confirm that. I know that when I was in school we had a parent that through a fit because they could not use the track when they wanted and demanded a key to get in. AD said ok you don't get a key but we will unlock it for you whenever you want in. They got quiet. Then after a few more request they simply left it open 24/7.

That was my impression as well. I didn't ask what sort of permission I needed so perhaps I could call the HS for permission every time I wanted to take my 8 year old out to practice..For the moment there is another public field which we use
so I didn't inquire but since that other field is getting a major overhaul in the next few years I might have to resort to begging the HS to let us use a field which my tax dollars paid for...

So, being from Indiana, you simply walk up to your high school and get on the basketball court anytime you like?

a) There are security issues with allowing just anybody to enter a HS buidling; same issues not there with outside softball/baseball field
b) Only reason I assumed I could do it was that it was never an issue for me 25 years ago. Then again those fields were not the best and maybe letting anybody play on them was the reason :D
c) I was mostly pissed off about her attitude towards us. The HC basically treated us like criminals even though I had no reason to believe I couldn't use the field as it was not locked nor were there any signs saying we couldn't play on it. When she drove up
I was hitting my kid grounders..it should have been obvious that we were not there to cause problems.

Edit: To give her the benefit of the doubt, maybe her age was a factor in her response. She is mid-twenties so perhaps she just isn't used to somebody doing softball
related activities outside of an organized setting. This was probably more common 20 to 25 years ago pre-TB.

There’s also liability issues. If they let you use it, they have to let everybody else. That leads to increased maintenance and clean up costs. I’m sure you would have politley stepped aside if a group that rented the field showed up. Others might create a problem thinking their tax dollars allow unfettered access to HS facilities. If the fields were lined and groomed the average softball parent would know that means to stay off. The beer leaguers showing off their hitting prowess with dingers over a 200’ fence might not be as respectful.

The HC still should have treated you better.

Agreed. I understand the reasoning but next year when the only public softball fields in the town are being re-done and I will have to drive 20 miles to find a field because we cannot play on any of MS or HS fields I still won't be happy about it. I teach at OU so maybe they will let us play on that field...My DD would love that
