Bob516, I wouldn't encourage her to become a team leader so much. It happens or it doesn't. Sometimes the kid that is told that by her parents becomes more demeaning and critical of teammates. Besides, your description already shows she seems to do it naturally. I think you best help her by keeping her humble. A dash of humility to go with her other attributes sounds like a winning combination.

I appreciate the advice. My DD loves to play the goofball in the dugout, so I don't imagine her teammates think she is taking herself too seriously.

Sounds like she's on the right track.

From my experience, my oldest two weren't so much like that but my middle one is. I didn't really have much to do with it. Just her personality. She hustles and she's respectful and when I think she may say something that a teammate or coach could take the wrong way, we talk about it. She played well last year but what really got me is when other parents would compliment her as a teammate and leader. I loved seeing her give fist bumps with the youngest, least experienced player during batting practice.

Your description sounds similar to my experience. Good luck to you!

Thanks. Another thing came to mind, something happened when my other DD was on a rec team. It was a team that not all the players knew where to go at every moment, and there was not a lot of hustle. I happen to be standing down the third base line when the catcher made a fake throw to third base to hold the runner. I saw the left fielder (not my DD) run to get into position to back up. It was so good to see someone on the team hustle like that I called out the the left fielder, "I love to see good back-up." She smiled at me. I notice she hustled so much more for the rest of the game.

I have decided I am just going to say to my DD1 how much I love see her call out the plays, directing the field and so on. I told her after Saturday's game how amazed I was how quickly she yelled "up" on a foul ball. It seemed to me she said it the moment the ball hit the bat. I asked her how she could tell the ball was going to be a pop up, she shrugged her shoulders and smiled.

That's good stuff
