I think DmystifieD may have been the coach that was ejected, if not actually, then l then a long lost relative.

No, not part of the game.

I can make points without having to make comments about someone, and i can have a discussion without insults. It truly is amazing.

Did the runner go to the right at contact? That's all I ask????? if yes, then I believe the runner didn't want to plow into someone.

I also dont think the coach has anything to do with the play.

I wonder if the runner has been taught to retreat towards home in that situation? (dont get tagged) of course i am assuming the run actually means something.

eta: I better clarify ... "that situation" = a 1B coming at them down line with ball and run needs to score.

If the batter-runner retreats towards home, they are out. If someone is teaching that, they are doing a really bad job.

I will clarify. retreating is taught, not for the benefit of trying to avoid the out at all. Not what I was trying to convey......it is being taught as i stated to ensure the runner scores, simply. I didn't expand on "retreat", but maybe I should have.....If you have hit a ground ball to first base with a runner on 3rd base and the play is on you, its clear you dont run into the tag, retreat, do what is necessary to delay the throw home... you retreat at very last second and ensure the runner gets home.

If runner retreats from a tag attempt between home and first it is a dead ball, batter runner is out, and all runners return to last base legally touched.

IIRC, contact isn't required for an obstruction call to be made. Why don't we just stop teaching players to try and draw an obstruction call in the first place? (Or does this belong in the "how to get an ump to call an IP" thread?). :)

Contact isn't required by rule, but in practice, most of us see obstruction go unenforced when the runner alters her path, particularly when rounding 1B.

Nothing wrong with a little contact...a shoulder rub that causes no injury, but shows the umpire that the fielder was in the way.

I agree with Dmystified. Batter started on inside of line and at contact was in foul territory. Fielder came to the line hard for a tag. Fielder put her body in the line of contact, not just her glove and ball. Contact should have been avoided but in this video the fielder is the aggressor. I bet ump wouldn't call it the same way twice. I have no questions why the coach was thrown out. You throw a girl in front of my runner and then blame my runner for contact while she is in foul territory, I am gonna argue in a not nice way and get tossed.
Teach a kid how to tag without putting their body in the path of a moving person. If the batter/runner was smaller, she would have been leveled and 1st would have been ejected. Look at the hard angle she takes to the line, no way she stopped before contact would have been made by her. The runner saw someone getting ready to hit her and braced for contact, not lowering shoulder. I can almost guarantee ump would have ejected 1st if she bowled over a smaller runner.

Look how closer her feet are to the line at contact. No way her upper body didn't cross over the line to make contact
