So true that the only time a rule is broken is when caught breaking it. True TB directors don't care. True your school is weaker team and not in conf/district contention you could probably play the whole team and no one would report it. But make it to the conf/district title game in school season and fifty people will come out with pictures and video showing more than 5 from school x on a team to get you disqualified.

IL you are either allowed 3 or 4 from same HS softball Team on same Team, nothing to do with HS coach. The 3 or 4 have to be on the school's softball team. Your entire Team can be from same school as long as they do not participate in SB.

I am not sure penalty if you get caught.

(Indiana has a similar rule, brother had to tell parents/ player to move on during tryouts because they were maxed out on HS player went to. Apparently she was a really good player too.)

In Illinois it's all about the coach.

During the school year, a person who is a coach in any sport at a member school, may be involved in any respect with any non-school team, only if the number of squad members from his/her school which are on the non-school team roster does not exceed one-half the number of players needed to field a team in actual IHSA state series competition in that sport. The number of non-school team squad members that are counted only include those that are eligible to play in the next season of that sport.

There's also a Q&A that says a coach can coach a non-school team out of season, but can't have more than half (so in IL 4 is the max) school players. Nothing is said about players playing on the same team if someone else is coaching.

CoachJD said above that I was incorrect, I went and pulled it up and it is different then I remember. I did not see any limit on player from same HS team in the current rules.

Well I bit the bullet and just called TSSAA to ask. Tennessee rules state no more than 5 from same school softball/baseball team allowed on roster once school is in session. Can NOT change out with next available player from the high school team. The first 5 must stay the 5. Also, a coach can NOT coach ANY of his high school players during school year, which right now is considered pre-season, not off-season. No rules in summer (which is the off-season) except for dead period.

And did you mention how colossally stupid these rules are? You are telling kids what they can and cannot do on their own time. They say they are doing it to, "protect the players" but don't be naive. Your state high school association is one step below the NCAA which is a corrupt as can be.

Just my view from where I am sitting.

Its about how many are rostered and only if you get caught.......for example usssa has a detailed player roster tracking system.....once you roster them they are on your roster for the year even if dropped.

So proof of how many players rostered thru the year is on there to be used against you.

The rule is meant to keep coaches from saying "play for me year round or don't play for the hs team at all" but we all know this happens everyday anyways. And coaches wonder why many of the best players don't play hs ball anymore.
