Here is a simple one,

My wife happen to look up from her phone when my DD grounded out, 4-3. My wife said excitedly, "She got a hit!"

I said she didn't, she was out at first.

My wife said "But she hit the ball."

I said, "She made contact, but she is out."

She said again, "But she it the ball.

I am not even sure what I said after that.

I imagine that conversation has happened many, many times for many people.

Ah, the difference between hitting the ball and a hit.
I don't bother to correct DW on that one. She could care less about stats, and she's happier that way.
Once I explained the importance of moving runners and RBI she became happier still.

When my older DD was playing softball for one season (DD#2 is the one whose been playing for years) - we celebrated anytime she made contact. Pitching was either awful by some teams that season (and it was a walkfest) or you'd have a team where there were tons of strikeouts (this was 10U)
If I had been keeping stats back then, I'm sure her contact % would have been below 10%. I don't think she had a hit the entire season but did get an RBI on a grounder. Needless to say, she went back to cheerleading ;)

I think my wife stopped doing this after about 6 years of travel ball. Finally got her to differentiate between "contact" and an actual hit. Tried once to get her to take that next step and differentiate between a hit and a ROE...the blank stare I got back convinced me to just give up.

I have seen it here plenty of times, and by here I mean DFP. Lines like, my dd only got to play in 2 games this weekend even though she was 6 for 6 with a double and a single.

I did have to explain to my wife who kept score for 10 years that a runner forced a first by the right fielder does not deserve a hit in the score book. (have seen that argued here several times)

Still remember when DD smoked a ball to CF and they threw runner from 1st out at 2nd. Try explaining to a 10 year old that that is an out on her. :)

Wait til she's giving you text updates when you're not at the game! I've gotta think that's the leading cause of divorce among softball parents.

My buddy whose DD was on a different squad was keeping their game changer stats this season, as I was doing for our team.

The coaches told him that no errors were to be recorded on either their team or the opposition. So everytime a girl put the ball in play and reached base (except FC), it was a hit. Everyone's BA and OBP was nice and fat. Last week we were chatting and he was asking about our top OBPs and I told him tops on our team was .472; second was .455 (DD), etc. He was shocked until I reminded him we count errors. (our team won our province and was second at nationals, so not like we didn't have offense)

You not allowed to record errors,it is the coaches fault she can not catch the ball. DD made a nice play a short, not her fault 1st basemen on our Team is not 7' 5" and can jump. They might have caught it.
