We were playing the last game of a 4 game showcase in PA over the weekend. 4:30 start, not a college coach in sight, STRICT drop dead time of 80 minutes.
We kick a few balls around and they go up 6 -2, we didn't look good at all. Probably about 10 minutes left when we are due to come up for most likely the last time. For at least the 2 innings prior the catcher takes a lot of time to come out to warm up the pitchers, none of their coaches bother to warm her up either. Well the last inning she makes last out at first and walks across the field to the 3b dugout. We look over and she is sitting on the bench with a COACH putting her shin guards on, one at a time.
Umpires are busy on the 1b side talking to each other and nobody seems concerned about the "hurry up" rules we played under all weekend. One of our players said it loud enough to hear that she will go warm her up, we didn't let her do that of course.
Well, the softball gods are with us and our "hustle on, hustle off" philosophy at all times and we score 4 to tie it up, after 2 outs. Horn goes off for drop dead and we end in a tie.
I guess I shouldn't be surprised, but I still am, to see a coach with such a lack of respect for the game and his opponent. Showcase should be about getting as many girls to the plate as possible in 80 minutes to show what they have and to show the defense too.
