DD's brand new TB coach (as of last weekend) made a comment to us as he was making an offer to DD for his team. I mentioned something about her having attended the big state U's softball camp this summer and being very disappointed in the quality of the instruction. I'm paraphrasing, but essentially he said that any camp for which you pay more than about $100 is not a real recruiting camp, but a money grab. Admittedly, the ones DD has been to so far have cost more than $100 (the ones where she stayed several days significantly more). What are people's opinions on that statement?

My first thought is there are different types of camps -a prospect camp will be different than a regular or high school camp. Second thought is camps are designed to be money makers, coaches fund a lot of stuff (like volunteer assistant coaches) through camp revenue. Third thought, even prospect camps can be divided into groups with most of the top prospects grouped together and followed closely by the coaching staff.

I don't know about how $$$ plays into it as far as determining whether or not the coaches might be interested in a specific girl. I do know that my DDs went to camps where they got great instruction and got a lot of interaction with college coaches and also went to other camps that we thought were a complete waste of time and money.

Football 3 day camp for big money or one day for $20. The one day camp are the people they know about and want to see. I'm envolved with one college softball camp and it's a money maker. Good camp for young girls but if they are interested in you they will work you out one on one.

It also depend on DD goals and personality. My DD is shy with goals of playing Division II ball closer to home. In the big camps, she is often overlooked and not given much consideration. In a small camp environment, she is able to stand out and be noticed. The coaches are able to give more one on one time and DD always took direction well and made adjustments.
