Ok. So my wife checked the books. Our daughter allowed 10 walks on the weekend; 2 walks scored on error after 2 outs and 2 walks scored on error before 2 outs; she worked 19 1/3 innings; threw 202 strikes and 82 balls; walked 10 batters and struck out 26. My wife said none of the runs would have scored without the fielding errors and she did allow two earned runs over the course of the weekend. We're trying to figure out her ERA for this tournament.
Not enough info to determine, especially because:
- Some errors just allow a runner to advance 1+ bases rather than prevent an out.
- Errors before 2 outs can make runs unearned if they scored after 2 outs.

Sparky gave the correct answer - "Reconstruct the inning as if no errors occurred. If the run would not have scored without the error then the run is unearned."

Thank you, TMD. We figured it out. Our DD's WHIP calculated to .776

That is pretty good! If pitchers keep their whip below 1.50 consistently they are keeping the team in positions to win games. Of course, the defense has to take care of the plays they should. A pitchers job is to get outs - not necessarily strikeouts.

WHIP is much better than ERA..

Also our coaches look at OBA... Opponents Batting Average
Both of those are much more important that ERA..

Also, not sure how old your DD is but as they get to second year of 14's, if they are playing "A" level strike outs go down significantly. More telling is WHIP.. As most outs are batted balls.

My DD is a pitcher and we found WHIP through Gamechanger this year. The problem when on a "lesser" team is that it still depends on the fielders. DD would give up a double in the OF that would be a routine FO on most teams. Same thing with grounders when the IF doesn't have the range or arms of an average team. Doesn't always tell you everything but was very useful amongst pitchers on the team.

True. Our DD has been pulled off the mound before. Not because of her pitching, but due to fielding errors allowing runs to score. DD plays on a U16 team and strike outs ARE less prevalent at this age group and so, yes, fielders should be backing up their pitcher by making the routine plays without error.
