DD does not want to play her senior year, I was wondering if any others on here skipped their senior year as well?

I told her that she will have selected a college by then and that she should ask the college coach what they think.

I don't think it matters, just curious about th experience of others.
thanks

It is not uncommon . Each year at least one of my Seniors will opt out. Usually the HS program is a joke or they just do not want to play for the coach.

College coaches do not care as long as you are doing something to improve your skills.

If she does skip be sure to make it count and have her tell the coach what she is going to do. Then she needs to go do it with a vengeance and regularly communicate her progress with the coach. Excellent opportunity to set the tone with her new coach. :)

DD1 did not play her senior year due to the coaches and a couple of girls on the team. She wanted to enjoy playing her last year of ball and played travel ball. this weekend she is playing her last games in an All-Star event. She turned down a couple of offers to play in college. Not what she wanted to do.

DD2 quit softball all together after her Junior year. She decided that she wanted to just concentrate on cheerleading. She guest played for a couple of local A teams last fall but has not played since. She also did not like the high school coach nor how hit or miss the level or competition was.

Not every player is or wants to play beyond there Junior year or play in college. They love the game but regardless of what we as parents may want they are not married to the game.

Any advice on what they say - or don't say - for why they're not playing? I suspect some reasons/rhetoric might raise a red flag about them...

If your DD is a fast runner, what about if she ran track her senior year?

My DD 1 was the fastest softball player as a freshman, and almost didn't play softball. She and a close friend came to school the day they had to decide, both had forms filled out and signed by parents for both softball and track. During the day, they talked and decided to play softball.

If your DD is fast, then working with good sprinting coaches for a while could possibly improve her speed.

One guy my kids knew signed a football scholarship with Pitt. His new football coach asked him to run track his senior year, in addition to football. The guy got a gold medal at the state championships. (He's had a great run as a wide receiver at Pitt).

We had several girls decide not to play HS ball through the years. Some continued to play TB and signed to play in college. I would just suggest that you keep your DD's college coaches informed and find a good alternative that keeps your DD in game shape.

3-time US WNT member Raven Chavanne (Raven Chavanne) ran track all 4 years in HS instead of playing softball and her 100-meter time went down by .65 secs. From her UTenn profile:

HIGH SCHOOL/CLUB

- Excelled in track at Newbury Park, but did not play softball at the school

- Incredible speed stood out on the track as she earned four first-team All-Marmonte League and four all-county selections while winning the league's 100-meter title in four consecutive seasons with times of 12.55 (2006), 12.31 (2007), 12.25 (2008) and 11.90 (2009) and the 200-meter title four straight years with times of 26.43 (2006), 25.43 (2007), 24.90 (2008) and 24.54 (2009)

- All-CIF track and second team all-state as a senior in 2009

- Holds Newbury Park records for the 100-meter dash (11.90), 200-meter dash (24.54) and was part of the 4x100-meter relay (48.08)

- Her 100m time as a senior in 2009 rated her eighth in the state of California, while her 200m time was good enough for 12th

DD had reservations about playing her Senior year. Coach treated her horrible, no respect, talked bad to and about her, and it trickled down. The younger players started copying the coach. No support from her fellow seniors. She lasted part of the season before she walked away. She used her suddenly free time to work out in the gym.

She's seen her college coach several times over the summer at tournaments, he's never asked if she even played HS ball this year. He's told her many times in the past he doesn't care about HS ball.
