Just behind home plate
I'm currently sitting underneath a pavilion between games writing this. I saw two scary scenes in our local round robin tournament games today.

The first scary scene happened when we were in between games. Our team was sitting underneath a pavilion near the field we were supposed to play our second game of the day. We were watching a game between two teams in the other bracket. In the top of the third inning, two outs, runners on second and third, home team winning 4-3. The batter hit a 2-1 pitch to right center. The runner at third scored. The runner at second was coming around to score. The ball in right center was coming in. She hit her cutoff man at second and the ball was coming in to home when the runner was coming around to score. Both the runner and the catcher had a major collision at the plate (catcher wasn't wearing her mask, she did have her helmet on since she wears a two piece). Runner was called out but both players were injured. We watched in shock as both players were taken by ambulance to the hospital.

Second scene happened in our next game. The team we were playing against didn't get much of a break between games to give their players a chance to cool off and get something in them. In the fifth inning and temps around 90, game tied at 5, two out and no one on, I saw the next batter come up to bat. Just before she got into the batters box, I saw her just fall over because of the heat. I tried to do what I could to help her until paramedics arrived. I yelled for someone to bring one of my spare togs soaked in our drinking water. I wrung it, snapped it and put it on her head trying to help her out. Paramedics came and eventually helped get her cooled down again.

Please keep these people in your thoughts.

Jay Weaver at the Catching Camp taught DD to NEVER, NEVER, NEVER (did I mention NEVER?) throw your mask off. Primarily for situations just like this. He said that with the hockey style masks, your visibility is not limited. Sounds like she had on an old style mask and I would wonder why. Terrible situation though

That's what I thought when I saw that too. I've been in some collisions at the plate. But one, I don't take my mask off (I did in the second part when I was helping the other girl). Two, I wear the hockey style mask. But we looked on in shock as both girls were taken off the field by ambulance. I can only assume what injuries they have. Safest bet would be that at least one of those girls has a concussion. But I don't know if her old school mask would have prevented that from happening if she (the other team's catcher) was wearing it.

Prayers sent. It can be dangerous. One minute everything is fine the next minute catastrophe strikes.

In my beer( Dont ever drink and play or drink period) league a few years ago I saw the pitcher and catcher run headlong into each other. One guy had a three inch gash over his eye and was knocked out for 10 minutes(ambulance showed up before he woke). The other guy never lost consciousness but shattered his orbital bone and spent 3 days in ICU at UC Davis. It was bad.

I like to say a prayer by my self before each game that no one gets injured and everyone has a good time, I also pray that I hit 5 home runs. If that ain't your thing break out your lucky rabbits foot or voodoo doll and hope for the best.

Keep your head on a swivel.

The collisions are bad, but the heat stroke just scares me. I worry playing about our games tomorrow with exp temps near 110 playing on turf.

That collision I saw today scared me. We could hear them hit up at the pavilion we were sitting at. The last I heard, the catcher had a concussion, a badly broken nose and was missing a tooth. The other girl has a concussion, a couple of fractured fingers and a broken wrist. The other girl I heard was okay but is still in the hospital for observation. Her temp I had heard was getting near heat stroke territory. Her coach and her parents both thanked me and the EMT's for everything we did to help their daughter.

I'm assuming you must be in the southwest. Our heatwave in PA is supposed to be lessening with a chance of rain and thunderstorms starting tomorrow. Our heat index today was 108 and the actual temp was 97.
