I do not know what planet some of these coaches are from:

At a tryout for a 10U team:

"Honey, you'll never develop into a good softball player."

To an 11YOA kid (he knew the kid was on a travel volleyball when he put the kid on the team):

"You have to quit volleyball. If you don't, you are off the team."

Hmmm - I wonder if DD's soccer coach took up coaching softball?

Last year he took her on the team knowing she played softball and basketball in addition to soccer.

He told her -
I will never start you no matter how good you are or how many practices you attend until you quit your other sports.
You will never make a high school team OF ANY SPORT unless you specialize.
You should be on a higher level team but I will never recommend you move up until you give up softball.

When she missed practice one week because she was at outdoor ed with her school he told her teammates to "shame" her when she returned.

He also told DD's best friend on the team that he was very concerned about her weight and would not start her until she was "more fit". She was 12. Her dad is a huge man who played pro football. She is a strong, healthy kid - body shaming anyone?

He should be ashamed of himself! DD said he was a robot...LOL!

DD had a coach at 12u who told her she'd never hit the ball out of the infield because she was small. This high school season he happened to be at a game with his DD (my DD is a junior and although fairly tall is still small built). DD ripped a stand up 3 RBI triple to the fence with 2 outs. He kinda looked at me, muttered something to his kid and walked away.

I can relate to that to a large degree. Had girl who played travel volleyball on the team this year. We only practiced on Sunday mornings early during the winter. She missed 60% of the practices either completely or by having to leave early. She missed spring tournaments for volleyball. She put the team in a a bind by playing another travel sport that directly conflicted with the softball team. She was behind on everything we worked on over the winter because she missed so much. It made the team that much weaker.

If a player is playing a school sport I have no issue with that. It's trying to play another travel sport at the same time we are in season. None of the other girls on the team did so. They did play school sports and missed for school sports, but nowhere near what the volleyball player did.

And yet, those same coaches will always give the old "we love multi-sport athletes" speech at the beginning of the year. Until the other sport interferes with a tournament, a single game, or even a practice. LOLOL.

DD's 10U coach told her she wasn't cut out to be a pitcher. I still laugh at that.

DS in 10U rec ball this year. His birth date falls 2 weeks before the cutoff date.
Him: You're son's just so small.
Me: How old is your son?
Him: He's about to be 11.
Me: Mine will turn 9 during the season.

The coaches were the most negative people I've ever been around, and couldn't figure out why the kids didn't play as a team.

One of the coaches nearly got in a fist fight with a parent.

As it turns out, the two main coaches had recent drug felonies, and the dugout mom had a theft conviction.

Yes, the organization does background checks. I guess it doesn't matter what the outcome is.

I am always curious what, for example ASA, looks at to approve a coach and give them a card.

You do not know what you do not know but everything seems to be an open secret.
