I am always curious what, for example ASA, looks at to approve a coach and give them a card.

You do not know what you do not know but everything seems to be an open secret.
My ASA background check took literally less than 15 minutes for it to come back approved. I have no idea what they searched but whatever it was they were satisfied quick.

Now admittedly I don't have any recent drug felonies or convictions for theft but still, 15 minutes?

[...]We only practiced on Sunday mornings early during the winter. She missed 60% of the practices either completely or by having to leave early. [...] She put the team in a a bind by playing another travel sport that directly conflicted with the softball team. She was behind on everything we worked on over the winter because she missed so much. [...]It's trying to play another travel sport at the same time we are in season.

Sparky,

I'm not trying to pick a fight - but if your main complaint is about missing winter practices - then what time of year would you consider softball to not be in season?

It's not very popular on here to say anything bad about coaches but you have to wonder how many kids give up a sport that they at one point loved because of some jackwagon coach. I know I've seen it happen too often.

My daughter plays the following sports, basketball, fastpitch, wrestling, roller and ice hockey and yes she's good at all and yes she's going to miss/late a practice. Last year she played in a roller hockey tournament, but we made special arrangements, to have her at the fastpitch games (sametown) because they needed her. We had to rush her over to the ballgame but didn't make the warm up. She sat the whole game. What the heck goes on in these coaches minds. No disrespect intended but most coaches I have met are control freaks! IT'S THEIR JOURNEY NOT YOURS. Quit trying to control them and find a way to motivate them. Most kids who play travel anything are motivated, turned them loose and see what happens. When I grew up best players played period. We as kids knew who had the talent and skills. This also doesn't count all the hours we work on skills outside of practice. Needless to say she's not playing for him. So many people are afraid of going from good to worse than good to great. I am a Coach and my best players are multi sport athletes and I don't expect them to make every practice, just be polite and let me know when your not going to be there. Don't forget you also have to teach them to have open lines of communication with parents, you and other people in their lives. Give them respect and expect it in return.

Bit of a rant.

Thanks for listening!

Varsity SB coach told my DD she wasn't dedicated to SB because she was playing Soccer. She didn't listen to him and it cost her. Should be fun watching her play baseball this year. Lol

The team had two straight months completely off. Practices resumed after the 1st of the year. Practices were very early on Sunday mornings to keep from interfering with other things the girls were doing We bent over backwards trying to avoid conflicts. Yet, travel VB caused the player to miss a lot. Again, this was not school ball. This was a player trying to play two travel sports at the same time. It just doesn't work.

The coach has to worry about the dozen other journeys on the team and making sure this part of it is as successful as he/she can make it. Not just your DD's.
