Starting this fall Missouri is requiring masks for all high school pitchers and strongly urging them for corner infielders.

It had some momentum here after a pitcher in the state tournament took a line drive to the face and broke both eye sockets, cheekbones, etc. Our HS district required them for pitchers and third base when DD was an sophomore and junior and then this year they dropped it after everyone complained. Crazy. DD has worn one when she plays the infield (primarily catcher) since she was 14...

Let me start by saying I have no problem with any player wearing any equipment on defense that they feel will protect them to whatever level of comfort them see fit.

That said, I wonder what will happen if a player wearing a mask gets clobbered and seriously injured or killed. Remember, there is no standard set.

Not big fan of the government sticking their nose into this or other sports situations.

And I tire of the cowardice demonstrated by coaches and parents who beg for such a rule mandating the masks. If it was that important to them, why is there a need for a rule or law to get them on their players/daughters during a game?

This is the part I agree with. If a girl is injured by a mask that gets damaged especially if she normally would not wear one the state athletic association will face a lawsuit.

They are great pieces of equipment and DD #1 wore one when she was younger. I personally believe younger kids should definitely wear them but as they get older it should be the parents and players choice.

I wonder if it is necessary to require masks. I see more and more girls in the circle and on the corners wearing masks. And it helps when pitchers at the highest levels are wearing masks. My daughter started wearing a mask at 14U when she noticed that some of the girls at that level could hit the ball hard. I think a lot of other girls reach the same conclusion.

Also, I assume everybody knows that while masks certainly help when a girl takes a ball to the face, serious injuries can still result. I know one pitcher who suffered a bad concussion and a bent mask following a hit. Of course, I shudder to think what would have happened had she not been wearing a mask.

This country is filled with feel good legislation. Now that everyone in Kentucky feels good, can we just move on to where everyone is able to make the decision that fits them the best. Oh, and if some coach doesn't want my daughter because she wears a mask, so be it. She will take her talents elsewhere, although I doubt that will be the case, as most coaches I know, would sell their mother for 1 more win.

The mask debate is taking care of itself. The older players did not have masks available when they started. Coaches and players looked at them as unnecessary when players started wearing them. As more younger girls started using them they became more common place at younger ages. This has eventually spread into older age groups as these girls got older. Now you are seeing them more than ever in college.
