I need some guidance - HS coach wants to change daughter from pitcher to catcher

I got word today that my daughter's HS coach wants to move my daughter (when she doesn't pitch) to catcher. Here's my concern: She is an elite pitcher on the one of the three highest A level teams in the state. So, her future is in pitching. She has never caught in her life. Her coach told her today that it would best help the team because she is an athlete and can play anywhere...plus her arm is the strongest on the team.

I'm worried she is going to get hurt. Either a foul ball catches her in the pitching hand or some other strange injury due to her not knowing how to properly catch.

Please keep in mind: SHE HAS NEVER CAUGHT BEFORE!!!

So - Am i worried about nothing or should i be very concerned?

The answer is, "no thanks". Be prepared to run track or do something else for those 2 months in the spring.

You are one foul tip from being out for the summer.

Hi. That would be a "no." People try that with my pitching students, all of the time. Yes, they are better athletes, because they put the time in. I am going to start telling these coaches, "My pitching students are not your catchers." LOL
What does your DD want to do? Will she play after HS?

Yes, she will play after high school. She has had a couple mid-major D-1 offers to pitch so far this summer.

For most other positions I would say sure...but for a pitcher with college offers on the table I would politely decline.

That was going to be my question? Who catches your daughter? And if my DD was a pitcher I would never let her behind the plate.

Absolutely, no way. My daughter has been asked to catch in the past (she actually kind of wants to try catching) but there is just no way it is worth the risk. Between the pitching commitment and my daughters physical stature there is no way I'm going to have her get behind the plate.

BTW One of my past players that was an "ace" pitcher was converted into a catcher and now she hasn't pitched in over a year.

No freaking way. Too easy to get injured at catcher. DD caught 3 games this weekend and was injured 3 times. None of those injuries were catching related though, she got a nice raspberry from a slide, a pinched hand setting up a bownet and scratched herself stepping over a ball cart! No D1 offers though HaHa

Nope. Way too easy to get injured, and high school is way to old to be a "beginner" catcher. If she is good enough pitcher to be getting D1 offers, she should be concentrating on that. School is way to expensive to possible throw away some scholarship money. We just looked at a medium size D1 school with DD last weekend. 10k a year for just room and board. Ouch.
