Help! ASA/USA Softball Nationals

DD's team earned a birth to the 18U ASA/USA Softball National tournament with their tournament win at a qualifier this past weekend. I didn't think anything of it since the tournament is usually at least halfway across the country (we earned a berth last year but it was in Iowa I think and we parents voted not to go) but our manager let us know that it is in Salem, Oregon this year - so we are really excited! My question to the group is: How do you book a hotel room when you don't know how deep you are going to go in the tournament? Do you book a few days and then add nights on as needed? I wish that I had a 5th wheel...

In our experience, you book a room long enough to get you through the last day of the tournament, but make sure you can check out early with no penalty if you don't get that far (which, unfortunately, is the situation we frequently found ourselves in). We have yet to have a problem with any hotels. Of course, if you get knocked out late afternoon and then want to check out that same day, they may charge you one more night since you're well past the standard check-out time. In that case, stay one more night and have a season-ending party.

We are in the same position this year that you have been in past years...will not be traveling from IL to Salem OR this year.

We always get a place to stay for the whole week and think of it as a vacation. Try to find some stuff to do that's fun when we're not playing ball. Both times we've gone (USFA, not ASA) we've been done on TH. We stayed til Sat goofing around, going to the beach, etc then came home a day early.

If you dont book the whole tournament then you are admitting defeat before you ever get there. LOL. Been a long time since Ive been to nationals as a parent, but unless your team goes 2 and BBQ the championship is usually only 1 or 2 more days tops. Just check with the hotels as you are getting rates and see if they have a penalty for early checkout. We always just planned other activities while we were out of town and if the team went out early just moved up whatever else we were doing.

You are pretty much stuck booking a hotel for the week. If it is any consolation, ASA will drag out pool play for several days, and the earliest they typically send teams home in bracket play is Thursday, Friday if you win a game or two. Making it to Saturday is an accomplishment.
