Runner on second is stealing 3rd. Ball is hit to SS. It skips up and deflects off her glove to the second baseman who throws out the runner that was on second trying to go home on the play. Result the runner was tagged out about 3/4 down the third base line which ended the inning. If fielded cleanly the SS would have thrown out the batter at 1st.

Is this an E6 or a fielders choice?

If the play with "routine effort" would have resulted in the batter-runner being out at 1, then it's an E6. Kind of like if there is a runner on 1 and an OF drops a routine fly and as a result is able to throw out the runner at 2, that's an E on the OF and the batter ROE.

I would go 6-4-2 FC, no error, but my opinion could change with the addition of new facts. :) I see this as a play where you got the lead out, not as intended but there's no guarantee that the aggressive baserunner wasn't going to try to go home had you made the play at 1st. Joe Morgan's famous "you can't assume a double play" is in my head now, and this isn't close to the situation that he always talked about, but still, the team made the important out.

Agree.

Assuming that the second baseman didn't also have a play at first.

This would be a fielder's choice, no error.

Charge an "error" on the routine play not properly executed.

Would have to see it, but a ball that "skips up" (a bad hop?) isn't necessarily an error on the SS.

Scratch all of that. After watching it again the ball took such a big bounce the first time that the SS would have had to make an amazing play to get her at first. It's not close enough to discuss the fielding of it. That's why the play at home was somewhat close.
